Hannover and head coach André Breitenreiter have parted ways by mutual consent with immediate effect, the Bundesliga 2 club confirmed on Wednesday.

Breitenreiter returned for a second stint as Hannover coach in December 2024, but inconsistent results have left the 96ers six points adrift of the promotion play-off spot with only four rounds of fixtures of the 2024/25 season remaining. The 51-year-old, who also represented the Reds as a player, oversaw three wins in 13 matches (D7, L3).

"André took on the task in winter with great vigour. We got off to a decent start and put in some very appealing performances on the pitch, but we also dropped too many points. Unfortunately, we then gradually stopped moving in the right direction," explained Hannover sporting director Marcus Mann of the decision.

Breitenreiter was unable to provide the spark needed to lift Hannover into the promotion places.

Former Hannover assistant coach Lars Barlemann, U19s coach Dirk Lottner and U17s coach Christian Schulz will oversee Hannover's final four fixtures of the regulation season, beginning with Sunday's home meeting against current leaders Cologne.
