2. Bundesliga
Former VfB Stuttgart reserves and youth team coach Markus Fiedler has been appointed Magdeburg's new head coach after Christian Titz departed for Hannover.
After working at Hoffenheim and managing at various levels at Stuttgart, Fiedler will begin life as a senior head coach for the first time at Magdeburg.
The club decided to part ways with Titz after finishing six points short of the second automatic promotion spot and five short of the promotion play-off spot in third. Replacing Titz as the Magdeburg boss, the 39-year-old will start his work on June 23 as the team prepare for a new Bundesliga 2 season.
"We look forward to our future collaboration with Markus, a dynamic and tactically adept head coach," said Ottmar Schork, Magdeburg's sporting director.
"Markus has done an outstanding job at VfB Stuttgart for several years, developing young, talented players with a targeted approach. Together with him on the team, we want to continue to shape the future of our Magdeburg successfully."
Fiedler joined the Stuttgart setup in 2015, initially as the youth team boss. He managed to impress and soon enough would be appointed to take charge of the U17s where he would take the team to the Bundesliga final. Further promotion would follow to the reserve side, who were in the fourth tier at the start of the 2023/24 season. Under Fiedler, they would experience promotion to the 3. Liga and made sure to stay there too.
"Leaving Stuttgart is incredibly difficult for me. I was able to experience 10 wonderful years at this great club. However, when the offer came from Magdeburg, it quickly became clear to me that I wanted to take this opportunity," explained Fielder to Magdeburg's club media.
"I'm really looking forward to joining Magdeburg. The club has a long tradition, with sensational fans and a history that is known throughout Germany and beyond. With Magdeburg, I want to continue the positive sporting path we've taken and contribute to their further development."
After finishing in fifth place last term, Fiedler's job will be to improve on that and try to take Magdeburg up to the Bundesliga for the first time. The 2025/26 Bundesliga 2 campaign starts on the weekend of 1-3 August.
