2. Bundesliga
New Zealand playmaker Sarpreet Singh has re-joined Jahn Regensburg on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich, having extended his contract at the Bundesliga champions till June 2024.
Regensburg are currently top of the Bundesliga 2 standings after the first two matchdays, having again made a great start to the campaign like last season when Singh was there for his first loan spell.
Injury curtailed his progress but he still registered five goals and eight assists in 25 league outings. The New Zealand international was then set to permanently leave Munich, but has since extended his contract with Bayern until 2024 and moved back to the Jahn-Stadion for what is hopefully another strong campaign.
"After Sarpreet's move to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga didn't work out and he had to miss a few weeks of training because of injury, we're pleased he can return to familiar surroundings," said Jochen Sauer, head of the FC Bayern Campus. "We're convinced he can get back to his old performances at Jahn."
Regensburg director of sport Roger Stilz added: "We're delighted Sarpreet is returning to us. Since his injury wasn't straightforward, we'll give him all the time he needs to get match fit. But he'll join the team in the coming days and complete his recovery here in Regensburg."
Singh is also looking forward to another season with Jahn: "I had a great year for much of the time in Regensburg. That's why I'm even happier to be back. Obviously, the first thing for me is to be fully healthy and pain free again. I'm very grateful to Jahn that they want to support me on this journey. When I'm back on the pitch, I want to build on last season and enjoy success with the team."
The attacker originally joined Bayern in July 2019 on the back of an impressive display at the FIFA U20 World Cup, appearing only days later for the first team in a pre-season friendlies against Arsenal, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur. However, the Auckland native of Indian descent was mostly used with the reserves.
The attacking midfielder made just two competitive appearances for the Bayern first team, with his debut coming against Werder in December 2019. He became the first New Zealander since Wynton Rufer – himself a former Bremen player and official Bundesliga Legend – to grace the German top flight.
A brief loan spell at Nuremberg followed at the start of 2020/21 before a season-long deal at Regensburg last term. The left-footed playmaker helped them to a strong start in Bundesliga 2 with five goals and eight assists over the first 19 matchdays, before a pelvic issue curtailed the second half of his and Jahn’s campaign.
