Schalke started with a bang and promoted Arminia Bielefeld ran riot as Germany's second tier returned in style this past weekend...
Schalke 2-1 Hertha Berlin
Goals: 1-0 Sylla (16'), 2-0 Katić (23'), 2-1 Grønning (89')
Red card: Katić (90'+8)
Schalke started the season with a deserved win over Hertha Berlin. After an electric start in Gelsenkirchen, Moussa Sylla and debutant Nikola Katić scored in the space of seven minutes to punctuate a dominant first-half showing. Sylla had already seen an effort cleared off the goal-line when he was denied his second of the night by Hertha goalkeeper Tjark Ernst. Hertha's best chances fell to Deyovaisio Zeefuik and Fabian Reese, who were both denied by Loris Karius. Substitute Sebastian Grønning did pull one back before Katić was sent off for a second bookable offence, but it was all too little, too late for the Old Lady.
Arminia Bielefeld 5-1 Fortuna Düsseldorf
Goal: 0-1 Itten 35’, 1-1 Sarenren Bazee 45’, 2-1 Kania 54’, 3-1 Felix 75’, 4-1 Grodowski 79’, 5-1 Schreck 90+7’
Red card: Oberdorf 44’
Newly promoted Arminia Bielefeld came out 5-1 winners against promotion candidates Fortuna Düsseldorf. Düsseldorf took the lead through Cedric Itten, but the game changed at the end of the first half when Tim Oberdorf was shown a second yellow card and then, one minute later, Noah Sarenren Bazee equalised. In the second half, Bielefeld didn’t let up, adding four more to complete a comprehensive victory and to move top of the table after the opening game.
Paderborn 2-1 Holstein Kiel
Goals: 1-0 Hoffmeier (29'), 1-1 Gigović (85'), 2-1 Bilbija (90'+9)
For their Bundesliga 2 season opener, Paderborn welcomed newly relegated Holstein Kiel. The Storks started aggressively, immediately looking to press the hosts, before Paderborn began to take control, with Marcel Hoffmeier’s rocket giving them the lead - which they took into the break - just before the half-hour mark. Armin Gigović thought he’d found a late equaliser for his side with a stunning direct free-kick, but a solo Filip Bilbija effort secured the three points at the death for Paderborn.
Darmstadt 4-1 Bochum
Goals: 1-0 Lidberg (5'), 1-1 Broschinski (34'), 2-1 Lidberg (45'+1), 3-1 Lidberg (48'), 4-1 Vukotić (56')
Darmstadt raced to a big opening-weekend win over recently relegated Bochum, thanks in no small part to a hat-trick from Isac Lidberg. The Swedish striker smashed a pass from Fraser Hornby into the top right before turning in on the rebound for his second after Moritz Broschinski had brought Bochum level. After Lidberg had completed his hat-trick, Aleksander Vukotić headed the Lilies into an unassailable lead.
Hannover 1-0 Kaiserslautern
Goal: 1-0 Aséko Nkili 75'
Hannover dominated from the start in a clash between two sides with multiple new faces after summer transfer activity. Kaiserslautern goalkeeper Julian Krahl made several good saves to keep the visitors in it until substitute Noël Aséko Nkili, on loan from Bayern Munich, slotted the winner in 15 minutes from time in Christian Titz's first match in charge.
Karlsruhe 3-2 Preußen Münster
Goals: 1-0 Ben Farhat (7'), 2-0 Wanitzek (22'), 2-1 Amenyido (32'), 2-2 Lokotsch (80'), 3-2 Egloff (88')
Red card: Koulis (62')
Karslruhe wasted no time in opening their account for the new season, taking an early two-goal lead thanks to finishes from Ben Farhat and captain Marvin Wanitzek, who was making his 200th Bundesliga 2 appearance for Karlsruhe. A brilliant solo goal from Etienne Amenyido clawed one back before half-time for Münster, but the positivity was short lived as defender Niko Koulis saw red for a challenge on Ben Farhat shortly after the restart. Lars Lokotsch managed to equalise late on for Preußen, but Lilian Egloff shattered Münster dreams with his late winner minutes after.
Elversberg 1-0 Nuremberg
Goals: 1-0 Rohr (90')
After narrowly missing out on promotion with a play-off defeat to Heidenheim at the end last season, Elversberg started the new campaign in perfect style by edging a tight encounter with Nuremberg. Nuremberg striker Artem Stepanov, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, had a couple of early opportunities to give the visitors the lead, but the hosts grew into the game under new coach Vincent Wagner and claimed all three points thanks to Maximilian Rohr's 90th-minute header.
Magdeburg 0-1 Eintracht Braunschweig
Goal: 0-1 Can Aydin 82'
Red card: Ehlers 54'
Mehmet Can Aydin was the unlikely hero for Eintracht Braunschweig as they claimed a dramatic victory away to Magdeburg. The home side dominated the first half and their top-scorer from last season, Martijn Kaars hit the post after just 28 minutes and would do so again before the game finished level at half-time. A red card for Kevin Ehlers did not dampen Braunschweig spirits though, and with eight minutes of normal time to play, Can Aydin stunned the crowd with a match-winner from outside the box to claim all three points for the visitors.
Greuther Fürth 3-2 Dynamo Dresden
Goals: 1-0 Futkeu 1’, 2-0 Klaus 9’, 2-1 Daferner 11’, 3-1 Futkeu 51’ 3-2 Kammerknecht 74’
Noel Futkeu scored a brace as Greuther Fürth edged an entertaining battle with newly promoted Dynamo Dresden. There were just 28 seconds on the clock when Futkeu headed in from Reno Münz to open his account for the new campaign. Felix Klaus used his head to double Fürth’s lead with nine minutes gone, only for Dynamo’s Christoph Daferner to follow suit soon after for 2-1. Futkeu gave the home side daylight with a wonderful solo goal at the start of the second half, but Dresden kept coming and were rewarded when Claudio Kammerknecht’s deflected 20-yard strike found the back of the net with 16 minutes of normal time remaining. Dynamo threw everything at Greuther in the closing stages, but could not find an equaliser.
