Matchday 13 results
Paderborn 0-2 Hannover
Goals: 0-1 Källman 20’, 0-2 Källman 36’
Hannover ended a two-game winless run to beat Bundesliga 2 leaders Paderborn, closing the gap to five points. The Reds showcased high-intensity football from the first whistle and were rewarded when Benjamin Källman opened the scoring after 20 minutes, netting from a tight angle. The Finn was then on hand to double Hannover’s lead with his eighth goal of the season 16 minutes later, bringing an end to Paderborn’s eight-game winning streak.
Preußen Münster 0-0 Schalke
Red card: Schenk 55’
Münster extended their unbeaten run at home to four games, picking up a valuable point against high-flying Schalke. The Royal Blues took an early lead inside two minutes but VAR judged Mika Wallentowitz to have pushed Johannes Schenk. Preußen then had the ball in the back of the net via Oscar Vilhelmsson, but Oliver Batista Meier was in an offside position in the build-up. Münster dominated possession and had the better chances but had to showcase their defensive ability when Schenk was sent off before the hour mark. Despite a numerical advantage, Schalke were unable to find a way through.
Fortuna Düsseldorf 2-1 Magdeburg
Goals: 1-0 Itten 37', 1-1 Lenz (o.g.) 88', 2-1 Itten 90'+5
Bottom-placed Magdeburg left the Merkur Spiel-Arena wondering how they failed to gain anything from a game they dominated in terms of chances. A combination of an inspired Florian Kastenmeier in the Fortuna goal and poor away finishing allowed the hosts to end a run of five Bundesliga 2 games without a win. Cedric Itten's opportunistic double also helped, with the home fans lifting the roof off after the Swiss forward netted with the last kick of the game.
Karlsruhe 2-3 Elversberg
Goals: 0-1 Ebnoutalib 26’, 1-1 Šimić 62’, 1-2 Petkov 66’, 2-2 Šimić 83’, 2-3 Keidel 90+4
In a back-and-forth game, third-placed Elversberg eventually came out as 3-2 winners thanks to a last-minute goal from Felix Keidel. The visitors dominated the game for large periods, but wasted chance after chance, allowing Karlsruhe to battle back twice. The hosts went into the break with a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from Younes Ebnoutalib. The strike took him joint top of the top-scorers list, but on another day, he could have scored four or five. After the break, substitute Roko Šimić equalised before a Lukas Petkov stunner once more gave Elversberg the lead. Šimić then grabbed a second equaliser late on before Keidel finally earnt the visitors the three points they deserved at the death.
Darmstadt 4-2 Greuther Fürth
Goals: 1-0 Hornby 11’, 1-1 Futkeu 38‘, 1-2 Futkeu 52‘, 2-2 Lidberg 58’, 3-2 Hornby 63’, 4-2 Papela 78’
Darmstadt made it two wins on the bounce with a comprehensive home victory over Fürth. The Lillies got off to a flying start thanks to a stunning opener from Fraser Hornby, before Noel Futkeu held his nerve to equalise from the spot ahead of the interval. Futkeu then netted in off the post to put the visitors’ noses in front, but Isac Lidberg pegged the Clover Leaves back minutes later. The equaliser visibly lifted the hosts and despite a continually resilient performance from Fürth, Hornby’s second and a Merveille Papela header secured the win.
Bochum 1-2 Dynamo Dresden
Goals: 0-1 Rossipal 26', 0-2 Vermeij 45+1', 1-2 Lenz 58'
Dresden withstood a second-half onslaught from Bochum to climb out of the bottom two with a valuable away win - and inflict the home side's first defeat under Uwe Rösler. Alexander Rossipal tidied up a rebound to send the visitors in front before Vincent Vermeij poked in a second just before the break. Bochum fired a total of 22 shots but only had a Cajetan Lenz strike to show for it as a late penalty miss by Francis Onyeka proved costly.
Hertha Berlin 1-0 Eintracht Braunschweig
Goal: 1-0 Winkler 56'
Hertha continued their fine form from before the international break by claiming a fourth consecutive win. The visitors were on top in an uneventful first period, but the hosts stepped up a gear after the restart and Marten Winkler headed the Berliners in front in style. Eintracht pushed towards the end and had a penalty award for a handball overturned by VAR, but otherwise failed to threaten as they slipped into the bottom two.
Kaiserslautern 4-1 Holstein Kiel
Goals: 1-0 Skyttä 7, 2-0 Skyttä 11', 2-1 Bernhardsson (pen.) 28', 3-1 Haas 37', 4-1 Skyttä 45'+6
Red card: Zec 49'
The hosts bounced back to winning ways after a setback against Hertha Berlin last time out and they had a Naatan Skyttä first-half hat-trick largely to thank for victory against the 10 men of Kiel, for whom David Zec was sent off. Skyttä - voted the division's rising star - put the hosts two goals up inside the opening 11 minutes and the Finn registered his treble on the brink of half-time. In between times, Alexander Bernhardsson had brought Kiel back into the game, before Mika Haas got in on the scoring act for the Red Devils, who are up to sixth in the standings.
Nuremberg 2-0 Arminia Bielefeld
Goals: 1-0 Lubach 49’ pen, 2-0 Becker 56’
After a dominant first half display, Nuremberg finally opened the scoring at the start of the second half from the penalty spot after Julian Justvan had been brought down by Mael Corboz. Rafael Lubach stepped up confidently and converted. Just a few minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead when Finn Becker controlled a back-post cross from Berkay Yilmaz before firing home at the near post.
