Promotion candidates Magdeburg were big winners at Schalke on Matchday 20 in Bundesliga 2.

Away-day experts Magdeburg raced to a win at Schalke to break into the top two without having won a game at home this season, before Hamburg rescued a point in their high-octane clash with Hannover in a busy Matchday 20 in Bundesliga 2.

Matchday 20 results

Schalke 2-5 Magdeburg
Goals: 0-1
Kaars 29', 0-2 Kaars 45+2', 0-3 Kaars 56', 0-4 Hercher 65', 1-4 Gantenbein 69', 1-5 Kaars 75', 2-5 Bachmann 90+3'

Magdeburg consolidated third place after thumping Schalke. Martijn Kaars was the match-winning hero with four goals that move him one strike ahead of Schalke's Moussa Sylla at the top of the Bundesliga 2 goalscorer standings. Although the shot count ended 17-16 in Schalke's favour, a clinical display of finishing from the promotion hopefuls saw them to - incredibly - their third consecutive 5-2 away win, as the hosts saw a five-match unbeaten run end.

Hamburg 2-2 Hannover
Goals: 1-0 Hefti 15’, 1-1 Tresoldi 53’, 1-2 Matondo 79’, 2-2 Dompé 84’

Neither side emerged from this fierce Bundesliga 2 clash victorious. The hosts took an early and deserved lead through Silvan Hefti, before dominating for much of the first half. But Hannover re-emerged after the break a different side altogether, levelling the scores shortly after half-time. New loan signing Rabbi Matondo then came off the bench to give the 96ers the lead with a beautiful curled finish. It looked to be a fruitful away venture for Hannover until Jean-Luc Dompé stepped up to dispatch a free-kick for the Red Shorts just five minutes later. With the points shared, second-placed Hamburg missed out on the opportunity to go top and Hannover slipped down to sixth.

Eintracht Braunschweig 1-2 Cologne
Goals: 1-0 Bičakčić 1’, 1-1 Martel 13’, 1-2 Downs 30’

Despite going behind in the first minute to an Ermin Bičakčić goal, Cologne turned things around to pick up a vital three points in Braunschweig. The turnaround was complete by the half-hour mark thanks to goals from Eric Martel and Damion Downs, and then a professional display followed in the second half as the Billy Goats saw out the victory to go two points clear at the top of Bundesliga 2.

Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-2 Ulm
Goals: 1-0 Jóhanesson 9', 1-1 Keller 13', 2-1 Kownacki 15', 2-2 Batista Meier 52', 3-2 Kownacki 60' pen.

Fortuna climbed to fifth after coming out on top in this entertaining clash. In-form hit-man Dawid Kownacki was on hand with his third brace in the last six matches to twice put the home side ahead, but it was no walk in the park for Fortuna. Relegation-threatened Ulm looked very strong in the final stages and, had it not been for their poor finishing, the result could have been very different.

Jahn Regensburg 2-0 Hertha Berlin
Goals: 1-0 Kühlwetter 45’ (pen.), 2-0 Huth 90’+2

Jahn Regensburg showed a great reaction to their heavy defeat in Ulm last weekend as they narrowly edged Hertha Berlin. They opened the scoring just before the break as Christian Kühlwetter coolly converted his spot kick. Fabian Reese came on at half-time to try and turn things around for the capital city side, but they were unable to create any golden chances, as Elias Huth scored a late header to put the game to bed for the hosts.

Elversberg 2-2 Karlsruhe
Goals: 1-0 Petkov (44’), 2-0 Sickinger (50’), 2-1 Wanitzek (75’), 2-2 Wanitzek (85’)

Elversberg’s promotion prospects took another hit on Matchday 20 as they let slip a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 and extend their winless run to four Bundesliga 2 outings. They looked to be on course for all three points after Lukas Petkov gave them the lead on the stroke of half-time, with Carlo Sickinger doubling the advantage shortly after the interval. However, Karlsruhe, who harbour promotion ambitions of their own, fought back and grabbed a point thanks to Marvin Wanitzek’s late double.

Nuremberg 1-0 Darmstadt
Goal: 1-0 Drexler (85’)

Darmstadt’s slide down the table continued with a third defeat in their last four games as Nuremberg kept themselves in the promotion mix with a late winner. Neither side could be faulted for commitment in a hard-fought first half, albeit with limited goalmouth action. The match wasn’t decided until the closing stages, when Nuremberg debutant Tim Drexler scored to give Miroslav Klose’s side a third home win in succession.

Paderborn 1-2 Greuther Fürth
Goals: 0-1
Hrgota 21', 0-2 Loosli 50', 1-2 Grimaldi 63'
Red card:
Riemann 26'

Paderborn started the stronger, but after conceding an opener from Branimir Hrgota's free-kick and losing keeper Manuel Riemann to a red card before the half-hour mark, the hosts were on the back foot. With Fürth extending their lead through Noah Loosli, things looked bleak for the hosts until substitute Adriano Grimaldi pulled one back and sparked a rebellion. However, although they created plenty of chances, Paderborn couldn't bag a second and Fürth held out for a precious away win.

Kaiserslautern 2-1 Preußen Münster
Goals: 1-0 Ritter 51’, 1-1 Kinsombi 79’, 2-1 Sirch 90’+2

Luca Sirch’s late winner gave Lautern’s promotion hopes a huge boost as they defeated Preußen Münster. Goalkeeper Julian Krahl kept the hosts in the game for large parts of the first half with a spectacular goalkeeping exhibition. Marlon Ritter opened the scoring shortly after the restart, but Münster’s new man David Kinsombi levelled the scores late on in the half. It looked as though Preußen would be snatching points from behind again, until Sirch rounded off a clinical counter-attack mere minutes before the final whistle. FCK are now just two points off the top and level on points with second-placed Hamburg.
