Hamburg moved above Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga 2 standings thanks to a 2-0 win in a full-blooded Nordderby in which both teams had a man sent off.
Werder Bremen 0-2 Hamburg

Hamburg got off to a dream start as Robert Glatzel headed in a Moritz Heyer cross inside the opening 120 seconds. Werder captan Christian Groß collected a yellow card soon after as Werder struggled to get to grips with HSV’s in-your-face approach. Groß was made to rue that earlier challenge when he was sent off for a second bookable offence. Marvin Ducksch delivered the perfect response to that setback, only for his free-kick goal to be ruled out due to Mitchell Weiser taking up a position in the Hamburg wall. The Dinos went straight up the other end to double their lead, with Meyer connecting with Bakery Jatta’s cross to loop a header over Michael Zetterer.
Numerical parity was restored early in the second half when Hamburg’s Sebastian Schonlau was shown his second yellow card for a professional foul on Niklas Schmidt. HSV didn’t take long to regroup, though, and should have stretched their lead on the hour. Jatta was denied in a one-on-one with Zetterer, before Ducksch fired over from 20 yards at the other end. Werder substitute Niclas Füllkrüg went closer still when he rounded Daniel Heuer Fernandes, only to slice wide from an acute angle. Hamburg climb to fourth, two points adrift of top spot and one clear of northern rivals Bremen after seven matches.

After winning back-to-back games across Matchdays 5 and 6, Schalke were brought back down to earth with a bump on Friday after slipping to a late 2-1 defeat to Karlsruhe. Kyoung-Rok Choi put the visitors in front inside the opening minute, but the Royal Blues fought back on the quarter-hour mark through veteran forward Simon Terodde, who netted his eighth league goal of the season. Yet Vitor Palsson’s sending off in the second half swung the tide in the away side’s favour again, with Marvin Wanitzek pouncing two minutes from time to hand Karlsruhe their third win of the season and inflict a third defeat on the Royal Blues.

Nuremberg 1-0 Hansa Rostock
Goals: 1-0 Shuranov (59’)
Nuremberg continued their unbeaten start to 2021/22 with a third victory in seven games to remain in the hunt at the top of the standings. Coach Robert Klauß’s side were better for the majority, but struggled to create any compelling chances until substitute Erik Shuranov struck just two minutes after coming off the bench.
Holstein Kiel 0-3 Hannover

Kiel started brightly as Fabian Reese and Phil Neumann went close, but the pendulum swung decisively the other way in the 10th minute when Holstein goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios was sent off for bringing down Lukas Hinterseer. Hannover took full advantage, with Sebastians Ernst and Kerk scoring quick-fire goals. Linton Maina added a third with 11 minutes of the first half remaining to all but end the game as a contest. The mid-table Reds saw out a second straight win with minimum fuss to leave Kiel looking nervously over their shoulders at the drop zone.
Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-1 Jahn Regensburg

A return to winning ways was on the cards for Regensburg as Max Besuschkow fired in from 18 yards just 18 minutes in at Düsseldorf’s Merkur Spiel-Arena. Kaan Caliskaner missed a gilt-edged chance to give the early-season pacesetters daylight, and was punished shortly after the half-hour mark when Robert Bozenik headed in a full-debut goal from Florian Harthertz’s cross to bring Fortuna level. The Feyenoord loanee threatened a second from distance, while Jahn’s Scott Kennedy had a late winner ruled out for handball following a VAR review as the league leaders failed to win for the third successive match.
Sandhausen 1-3 Heidenheim

Heidenheim didn’t look back once Oliver Hüsing gave them a 15th-minute lead in Sandhausen. With the exception of a Kevin Müller save from Charlison Benschop, the visitors gave little away in a dominant first-hand showing and went in at the break 2-0 up thanks to Tim Kleindienst’s tidy finish from Denis Thomalla’s pass. Sandhausen substitute Pascal Testroet reduced the arrears in he 53rd minute, but Heidenheim continued to pose the greater threat. After Christian Kühlwetter struck the woodwork, Patrick Mainka put the result beyond any doubt as Heidenheim climbed to within two points of top spot.
Darmstadt 1-0 Dynamo Dresden

Tobias Kempe scored the only goal of the game as Darmstadt got the better of Dynamo Dresden, despite losing Fabian Schnellhardt to a red card after only eight minutes. The hosts dug in deep after Schnellhardt's dangerous challenge on Yannick Stark was sanctioned by the referee, and they took the lead soon after when Kempe curled in a majestic direct free-kick from almost 30 yards out. The hosts continued to pose the greater threat and when Julius Kade also received a red card 20 minutes from time, leaving both teams with ten men, the guests' hopes of snatching an equaliser evaporated.
St Pauli 4-1 Ingolstadt
Goals: 1-0 Zander (34'), 2-0 Dittgen (50'), 3-0 Burgstaller (61'), 3-1 Röhl (72'), 4-1 Buchtmann (73')
Ingolstadt made a confident start at the Millerntor, but their ruthless hosts hit back clinically to earn a convincing win. It took Pauli half an hour to settle, by which time they were fortunate not to be behind, but when Luca Zander headed them in front, the floodgates opened. Max Dittgen added a second early in the second half from Leart Paqarada's cross and Guido Burgstaller added a third on the hour mark. Merlin Röhl reduced the arrears with the aid of a deflection before Christopher Buchtmann's low shot into the far corner completed Pauli's win.
Erzgebirge Aue 1-4 Paderborn
Goals: 0-1 Stiepermann (4'), 2-0 Michel (26'), 3-0 Platte (38'), 4-0 Stiepermann (48') 4-1 Gueye (51')
Paderborn moved to the top of Bundesliga 2 thanks to a convincing away win at Erzgebirge Aue, which led to the home team's head coach Aleksey Shpilevski being relieved of his duties with Aue the only side still to win this season. Marco Stiepermann gave Paderborn the lead after just four minutes and after Sven Michel and Felix Platte increased their lead to three by half-time, Stiepermann struck early again in the second half to put the result beyond doubt. Babacar Gueye scored what was no more than a consolation just a handful of minutes later as Paderborn held on to the margin of victory they needed to move above Jahn Regensburg to the top of the table.
