5 reasons Bayern will still progress against Inter

Thomas Müller, Harry Kane & Co. will be all fired up for Bayern Munich's UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg with Inter Milan.

Things did not go to plan for Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final as they lost 2-1 to Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena. However, with Harry Kane, Thomas Müller and a strong away record to rely on, they will still have enough to book their place in the last four, as bundesliga.com explains...

1) It's Kane-ing goals!

It wasn't Kane's night in the first leg but bad nights are a rarity for the striker. Scoring three times in the 5-0 aggregate win over Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 propelled Bayern into the quarters as Kane became the first Englishman to reach double figures in a single Champions League campaign

Now level with Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy, and one behind Barcelona's Raphinha in top scorer charts, he has personal business to attend to while helping his team move closer to clinching the trophy on home soil in May.

2) Müller on a mission

Jamal Musiala's absence due to injury is undoubtedly a blow for Kompany and Co., with his 18 goals in all competitions this season - including three in Europe - bettered only by Kane.

His unavailability, though, has opened the door for Müller to make his mark as he goes in search of a third Champions League success. The 35-year-old was initially named on the bench in the first leg but came on to equalise before Davide Frattesi snatched the win for the visitors.

Anyone who thinks Müller is distracted by his farewell tour, having recently confirmed he will leave Bayern at the end of the season, have forgotten the former Germany international's appetite for victory. He’ll be desperate to get his hands on as much silverware as possible before he departs. Should he be unable to decide the match himself, the likes of Michael Olise, Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané and Leon Goretzka could influence the outcome too.

Kane was one of several Bayern players who has chances to score against Inter.

3) Unlucky in defeat

Under Simone Inzaghi, Inter have developed into one of the most formidable sides in European football, largely thanks to their imperious defence. No side have conceded fewer than their three goals in this year's Champions League, while they have the third-best defence in Serie A too.

Despite their strength at the back, though, they were fortunate to concede just once in Munich against a Bayern team that produced an impressive attacking display. They managed to fire off 20 shots, forcing ex-Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer into six saves.

The Nerazzurri escaped with the win on the night, but another similar showing from Bayern in Milan would surely produce more goals.

Leroy Sané was on the scoresheet when Bayern last travelled to the San Siro to face Inter.

4) Previous at Inter

Bayern must win at the San Siro to have any chance of progressing to the last four. Fortunately, they have a strong record against Inter in Milan. All four matches there between the two teams have ended in a Bayern win, with the Bavarians outscoring their opponents eight goals to one.

The most recent meeting was in the 2022/23 group stage, when a Sané strike and Danilo D'Ambrosio's own goal secured a 2-0 win. A repeat would be enough to keep Bayern's hopes of glory alive.

5) Strong on the road

Bayern's 3-0 defeat at Feyenoord effectively ended their hopes of finishing in the league phase top eight. That, though, remains their only away defeat of 2025.

They’ve also made trips to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Freiburg, VfB Stuttgart and Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, winning three and drawing the latter, while they beat the Werkself 2-0 at the BayArena in the last 16. That win came after their 2-1 victory at Celtic in the play-offs.
