Bayern Munich and Canada star Alphonso Davies has been named the 2021 Men’s Player of the Year for CONCACAF.

2021 saw Davies pick up his third Bundesliga title with Bayern and also lifted the FIFA Club World Cup back in February. He made 47 appearances for his club, scoring one and providing eight assists from the left of defence.

Add in qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 21-year-old also played 13 times for Canada, scoring five and setting up another eight as the Maple Leafs remained unbeaten with him on the field (W9, D4) and went on to top CONCACAF qualifying ahead of Mexico and the USA to book their place at the World Cup for only the second time in their history.

“The award means a lot to me,” Davies said on receiving the accolade. “I’m happy receiving the award, especially knowing that there are really good players in CONCACAF. The award is not just to me but to the team around me.”

Davies received the most votes from coaches and players of CONCACAF’s 41 member associations, media representatives and fans.

While Davies has missed all of 2022 due to a mild heart condition, he is gearing up for his return, which could come as soon as the weekend against Augsburg. He and Bayern are still targeting Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League glory this season, before one eye turns to November and the World Cup.

“We’re happy we could make it. After 36 years of trying and trying, we finally got that milestone in our pocket,” the 30-time international said looking forward. “I know the whole country, the team, everybody is excited. We’re excited to go.”

Canada will take on Belgium, Morocco and Croatia – including fellow Bayern full-back Josip Stanisic – in Qatar this winter.
