Alphonso Davies has been in Doha for Bayern Munich’s winter training camp, and the Canadian youngster has already left a big impression on Robert Lewandowski.
Davies, 18, agreed a deal to join Bayern from Vancouver Whitecaps last July, but saw out the Major League Soccer season with the Caps before joining up with the record German champions in November.
Lewandowski, who has scored 22 goals in all competitions for Niko Kovac’s side this season, has been impressed with what he’s seen of Davies, and is confident of building up a quick understanding with the former MLS prodigy.
“I’ll try and speak with Alphonso a lot,” the Poland captain explained to fcbayern.tv. "For him I know that’s very important, that he feels comfortable in the new team and I want to help him. Of course, he’s very young, but I think he’ll be a great player!”
Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery may both be injured, but Lewandowski needn’t fear feeling lonely in the final third when Bayern kick off their Rückrunde campaign against Hoffenheim next Friday, with Davies and a certain Thomas Müller providing ample firepower.
“Thomas is a player who knows when and where he should run,” continued Lewandowski. “Sometimes we don’t need to speak to each other cos we know what the other one can do.
In the language of football what you say doesn’t matter as much as how you feel and I have this feeling with Thomas and I think he feels the same.”
Kingsley Coman has recovered from an ankle injury so Davies may find the competition for a first-team place fierce, but with Lewandowski plus an abundance of talent on his side, expect the Canadian Player of the Year to at least feature at the Wirsol Rhein-Neckar Arena on Matchday 18.
