Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Müller both struck braces as Bayern Munich dismissed Arminia Bielefeld 4-1 at the SchücoArena on Saturday night.
Bielefeld 1-4 Bayern
Goals: 0-1 Müller (8'), 0-2 Lewandowski (26'), 0-3 Lewandowski (45+1), 0-4 Müller (51'), 1-4 Doan (58')
Red card: Tolisso (76')
With Joshua Kimmich absent as he awaits the birth of his first child, Leroy Sane missing out with a minor knee injury and Alphonso Davies starting on the bench, Corentin Tolisso, Kingsley Coman and Lucas Hernandez were all handed starts by the champions ahead of kick-off in a changed Bayern side. But they were still welcoming into the fold a World Cup winning duo, as well as their UEFA Champions League hero, and inside eight minutes Müller put them ahead as Arminia Bielefeld were pulled apart by a slick exchange between Müller and Lewandowski. The pair were at it again shortly after, but this time Müller’s volley at the back post that met Lewandowski’s flick-on was denied superbly by Stefan Ortega. Bayern eventually did double their lead as Lewandowski lashed home from just outside the Bielefeld area after being found excellently by Leon Goretzka. Lewandowski made it 3-0 in first half stoppage time as his deflected effort squeezed past Ortega, to wrap up a dominant first 45 from Hansi Flick's side.
The hosts did start the second half brightly and nearly pulled one back when Ritsu Doan superbly freed Christian Gebauer, but the Austrian could not beat the advancing Manuel Neuer. Lewandowski hit the bar moments later, before Müller added a fourth - a goal again created by Lewandowski as the Bayern pair ran rampant. Bielefeld did, however, pull one back shortly before the hour mark, hitting Bayern on the counter with captain Fabian Klos holding up the ball before laying off for Doan to score a memorable first goal for the club. The Japan international then almost halved the deficit with 20 minutes to play, but his effort was deflected over Neuer's bar as Bielefeld applied late pressure that eventually saw Tolisso shown a red card for bringing down Klos when through on goal. Bayern held firm with 10-men, though, seeing out a convincing victory that puts them second in the table.
