Promoted Bielefeld get first win against Cologne

Joan Simun Edmundsson scored the only goal of the game as Arminia Bielefeld got their first victory since their return to the Bundesliga at home to Cologne.

Arminia Bielefeld 1-0 Cologne
Goals: 1-0 Edmundsson (78’)

In this match between the last two Bundesliga 2 champions, it was the 2018/19 winners who got going quickest when Sebastian Andersson headed a cross wide. The Swede had already opened his account with a header last week against Hoffenheim. The game then moved into the midfield third as both teams looked to press the other whenever the chance arose. It took a good half an hour for regular goal-mouth action, though. Sebastiaan Bornauw poked an effort wide following a corner for Cologne, before Bielefeld left-back Anderson-Lenda Lucoqui drew a first stop out of Timo Horn when tipping a venomous hit from range over the bar. The golden opportunity, however, fell to Billy Goats centre-back Rafael Czichos as a free-kick bounced through to the far post, but Stefan Ortega spread himself well to keep the tie level going into the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with former Cologne man Marcel Hartel and current Effzeh youngster Jan Thielmann both testing the opposition goalkeepers with efforts from range. Without a win in five Bundesliga away games, Cologne looked to push for a goal with the introduction of new signing Dimitrios Limnios, but it was Arminia who found a late breakthrough. It was route-one stuff with a long ball from goalkeeper Ortega. Edmundsson bent his run to beat the offside trap, running wide with Horn coming out but placing his shot between goalkeeper and post to send 5,460 Bielefeld fans into raptures and record the club’s first win in the Bundesliga for over 11 years.
