Vincent Kompany was on the end of a first competitive defeat this season, with Bayern Munich going down to an Aston Villa side for whom Jhon Duran netted a 79th minute winner to settled a closely-fought affair.
Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich
Goals: 1-0 Duran 79' (assist: Torres)
These sides' only previous meeting came in the 1982 European Cup final, in which Villa triumphed. Bayern - fresh from a 1-1 draw against Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend - looked to avert a slip-up at the home of the Premier League outfit this time around by taking the game to their opponents early on. Kane tested the reflexes of goalkeeper Emi Martínez with a close-range header, before Villa found the net through Pau Torres. The problem on both of those occasions, was that each event was declared null and void because of respective offsides. Villa's cause was then hampered by the loss of Jacob Ramsey, before Bayern went close with a stinging Michael Olise drive that Martínez palmed over. The clear-cut chances in the opening 45 minutes failed to flow, yet that didn't stop this even contest from fascinating the packed crowd inside Villa Park.
Bayern and Villa produced 12 goals between them in respective Matchday 1 wins, however, an opener here often looked a distant prospect. Kompany introduced livewire Jamal Musiala at the break as the visitors sought to inject some extra pace into proceedings. The Germany international was soon combining with Kane, but failed to keep his footing at the crucial moment when in on goal. Just when the sides appeared set on a path for a scoreless draw, Unai Emery's men struck with the winning goal eleven minutes from time. A long ball from Pau Torres found the onrushing John Duran, who spotted Manuel Neuer stranded at the edge of hia area. The Villa substitute duly lifted the ball over the Bayern keeper and in, to the unbridled delight of the the home fans. Martínez then denied Mathys Tel and Kane at the death to ensure a second win of the league phase for the Villains. After a first defeat of the season for Bayern, the Bundesliga giants will need to lift themselves in this competition with a visit to Barcelona pencilled in for 23 October.

As it happened ...
"It's always difficult to create chances against an opponent that sits deep. We had a good chance by Serge in the first half and another chance by Harry at the end. There were definitely situations that could have led to goals."
The corner comes in and Kane heads it straight for the bottom corner, but Martinez makes a save for the ages to win the match for Villa!
Kane takes the free-kick but it's sent behind for a corner and that could be that.
Diego Carlos gives away a free-kick in a very dangerous position to end the match.
Tel spots Gnabry in acres of space in the box and Martinez incredibly denies him what should have been the equaliser.
Mathys Tel tries to create something out of nothing coming in off the left, but his shot from range is easily saved.
Kompany brings off defender Kim and defensive midfielder Laimer for forward Tel and attacking midfielder Goretzka.
Laimer wins a free kick of Maatsen wide right of Villa's box.
Bayern are spending the second half around Villa's box, but the home team are holding on so far.
Coming off the bench Leroy Sané nearly puts Gnabry through for a one-on-one chance. Bayern are pushing now.
After substitute Maatsen tries his luck from range and one end, Musiala has his first try in the Villa box. A mazy dribble is stopped just when it looked like Villa could be in big trouble.
With Bayern in control, Unai Emery makes two changes. Onana, who appeared to be struggling with an injury, is replaced by Barkley. Bailey, who was a sub himself, comes off for former Dortmund fullback Ian Maatsen.
Kimmich tries to sneak a corner inside the post but puts it in the side netting.
Bayern have quickly grown into the half and are looking dangerous. A ball into the box from Gnabry needs to be well cleared by Carlos.
Watkins gets the ball on the halfway line and his old friend Upamecano is there to hunt him down and give away a free-kick.
Villa have the half's first attack and win a corner which Watkins nearly puts away.
Villa kick us back off, and thankfully for them, Onana is continuing after looking injured in the first-half. Bayern have made one change, with Jamal Musiala replacing Kingsley Coman.
Watkins has another battle with Upamecano for a ball forward but the Frenchman wins this one.
Olise provides the skill of the half by tricking an on-running Tielemans with a deft control and he then plays Gnabry in. Gnabry finds Laimer in the six yard box, but Martinez again responds brilliantly and smothers the ball.
Villa are having plenty of the ball now but can't get out their own half with Bayern defending man-to-man and giving them no room to manoeuvre.
Replays show Ramsey had needlessly wandered past Kimmich in the build up, otherwise Villa would be ahead.
Olise comes in off the right and unleashes a wicked left footed shot towards the top corner of the Villa net. Martinez makes a sublime save to keep the match scoreless, and then deals with the corner.
Kane releases Laimer down the right with a clever first time pass and Bayern are away. Laimer's final ball isn't up to scratch, though, and it's deflected into Martinez's arms.
Key midfielder Onana appears to be clutching his hamstring and looking towards the bench. He's continuing for now, but losing him would be a big blow.
Gnabry is played in by Laimer and has Kane free to square to, but opts to shoot from a tight angle and a huge chance goes to waste.
Ramsey looks in trouble and won't be able to continue. Former Leverkusen man Leon Bailey looks set to replace him.
...cleared again. Olise's curler was sent out the box before Laimer's wild shot went out of play.
Watkins again is found with a ball forward and tangles with Upamecano with the two the last men before Neuer. Referee Radu Petrescu waves off a potential free-kick and red card, and the home crowd aren't happy.
Digne finds pace on the left to send in a cross and it finds Watkins in the air. Kim does just enough to make sure his shot is off target.
Bayern are comfortable in Villa's half but all of a sudden they lose the ball and Watkins is played through in space. No bother, Neuer makes a trip to the halfway line to cut out the danger.
Gnabry ghosts in behind Villa's defence brilliantly but his ball across to Kane for a tap in is just too short.
Villa try to fashion a first chance as Tielemans searches for Watkins but Bayern are quick to react.
Bayern keep the pressure on and set up Kimmich on the edge of the box. He doesn't make a proper connection and it's a simple save for Martinez.
