Augsburg stun Bayern with derby win

Mads Pedersen and Andre Hahn earned Augsburg an historic win over Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, whose reply through Robert Lewandowski was not enough to prevent their second league defeat of the season.

Augsburg 2-1 Bayern
Goals: 1-0 Pedersen (23'), 2-0 Hahn 35' (assist: Iago), 2-1 Lewandowski 38' (assist: Müller)

With an opportunity to open up a seven-point advantage at the top of the Bundesliga, Bayern launched wave after wave of attack towards the Augsburg goal. Omar Richards sent in the first shot, sending the ball over, but the game was only going in one direction, until Augsburg took the lead against the run of play. Lucas Hernandez did well to beat Andi Zeqiri to Iago's cross from the left, but the French defender was unfortunate that the ball fell for Pedersen, who struck it on the volley past Manuel Neuer. Bayern were straight back onto the front foot, with Leroy Sane wasting a chance to break before Augsburg struck again. Iago was the provider with another of his wicked crosses from the left, and it was met by Hahn's header back beyond Neuer's reach onto the left-hand side of his goal. Bayern's reply was immediate with Thomas Müller flicking Benjamin Pavard's cross on with a backheeled assist for Lewandowski to sweep the ball past Rafal Gikiewicz on the volley.

Robert Gumny gifted Lewandowski with a glorious chance to bring Bayern level early in the second half, but the prolific Pole seemed as surprised as anybody and volleyed the ball over with the goal at his mercy. Alphonso Davies was sent on for Richards and he went close to levelling, missing the far post by a matter of inches with a low drive. Gikiewicz made an excellent reaction save to deny Lewandowski, with Davies hitting the rebound over, as Augsburg dug in deep to defend their advantage. Despite having their backs to the wall for the final ten minutes, Augsburg held firm to take three crucial points, which move them out of the relegation zone - at least for a night - and dent their Bavarian rivals' title push.
