Kane back on target as Bayern edge Augsburg

Harry Kane ended a two-game scoring drought to net his 23rd Bundesliga goal of the season as Bayern Munich beat a resilient Augsburg side 3-2.

Augsburg 2-3 Bayern Munich
Goals: 0-1 Pavlovic (23'), 0-2 Davies 45'+5 (assist: Goretzka), 1-2 Demirović 52' (assist: Mbabu), 1-3 Kane (61'), 2-3 Demirović (pen. 90'+4)

Augsburg went into this game having won their previous two home fixtures against Bayern, and they duly began confidently in a bid to make it a hat-trick. Ermedin Demirović sent out an early statement of their intent with a fine shot on the turn in the third minute, and they had had four attempts on goal inside the first 10. Elvis Rexhbeçaj thought he had given the hosts the lead with a rasping angled drive, but it was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. That let-off appeared to rouse Bayern, who replied with a Leon Goretzka shot into the side-netting before Aleksandar Pavlovic opened the scoring from close range after Augsburg failed to clear a corner. Thomas Tuchel’s men were the better side from then on, with Alphonso Davies drilling in from the edge of the box on the stroke of half-time to give Bayern a comfortable lead at the break.

Any thoughts that the game might be over as a contest were soon dispelled in the second half when Augsburg began boldly once again. They quickly pulled a goal back through Demirović, who guided a brilliant header past Manuel Neuer and into the bottom corner from Kevin Mbabu’s floated cross. Bayern again responded well and restored their two-goal advantage when Kane was left with a simple tap-in after Augsburg struggled to clear their lines following another attack. The hosts continued to go on the front foot though and had Bayern scrambling at the back, with a Dion Beljo header forcing Neuer into a reflex save from close range. It remained tense until the end, however, as Augsburg refused to accept defeat. Mathys Tel could have put the seal on the points in the closing stages when he was sent clean through by Leroy Sané, but his shot struck the post and bounced clear. Neuer saved an 88th-minute penalty from Sven Michel but was powerless to keep out a stoppage-time spot-kick from Demirović, setting up a nervy finale, but Bayern ultimately saw out the rest of the game to earn a hard-fought victory.
