Harry Kane provided two assists on his 100th Bayern Munich appearance and Luis Díaz struck again as the reigning champions survived a late Augsburg rally to prevail 3-2 at the WWK Arena.
Augsburg 2-3 Bayern MunichGoals: 0-1 Gnabry 28' (assist: Kane), 0-2 Díaz 45'+4 (assist: Laimer), 0-3 Olise 48' (assist: Kane), 1-3 Jakić 53' (assist: Fellhauer), 2-3 Kömür 76' (assist: Jakić)
Bayern arrived in Augsburg looking to build on their emphatic 6-0 opening day victory against RB Leipzig, while their hosts were also aiming to maintain momentum after their impressive 3-1 win at Freiburg. Former Bayern striker Sandro Wagner, now in the Augsburg dugout, faced his old club for the first time as a head coach, having come through the academy at Bayern before returning towards the end of his career in 2018.
The champions nearly took the lead within seconds when Konrad Laimer played a perfect pass to Michael Olise, who squared for Luis Díaz in front of an empty net, only for the Colombian to somehow miss the opportunity. Bayern continued to press, with Olise forcing Finn Dahmen into a save after the Augsburg goalkeeper had played a risky pass directly to the Frenchman.
The hosts showed glimpses of attacking intent through Han-Noah Massengo and Marius Wolf, but it was Bayern who broke the deadlock in the 28th minute when Serge Gnabry expertly headed home from Kane's pinpoint cross. The visitors doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time as Laimer reached the byline and cut back for Díaz, who finished calmly from close range to give Bayern a comfortable lead at the break.
Bayern appeared to have sealed the points just three minutes after the restart when Olise scored in his sixth consecutive Bundesliga game, finishing coolly past Dahmen after being set up by Kane. However, Augsburg refused to surrender and pulled one back in the 53rd minute when Kristijan Jakić volleyed home Robin Fellhauer's cross for his first league goal in 18 months.
The hosts continued to push forward and were rewarded in the 76th minute when Mert Kömür received a pass from Jakić and placed a precise shot beyond Manuel Neuer to reduce the deficit to a single goal. Augsburg pressed for an equaliser in a tense finale, with Kömür heading narrowly wide, but Bayern held firm despite a lengthy stoppage when Fellhauer required treatment and was stretchered off following a clash of heads with Sacha Boey.
The Colombian forward continued his remarkable efficiency in Bayern colours, scoring his second goal for the club. After netting with his first attempt against Leipzig on Matchday 1, Díaz again showed his clinical edge by converting from Laimer's cutback.
Beyond his goal, Díaz was a constant threat to the Augsburg defence, winning 13 challenges and creating several dangerous opportunities for his teammates. His intelligent movement and link-up play with Kane and Olise caused problems throughout, and his well-timed runs stretched the home defence repeatedly during Bayern's dominant first-half display.
