Werner fires Leipzig past Augsburg to sign off as club's record scorer

Timo Werner bagged his club-record 94th and 95th goals for RB Leipzig as Julian Nagelsmann's men concluded their campaign with a 2-1 win at Augsburg.

Augsburg 1-2 RB Leipzig
Goals: 0-1 Werner (28'), 1-1 Vargas (72'), 1-2 Werner (80')

Nagelsmann picked an experimental side to round out the season, with No.1 goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi rested completely and rare starts handed to Ibrahima Konate, Emil Forsberg and Tyler Adams – the first of whom made a long-awaited return from injury. Usual suspect Werner was busy from the start, though, and he could have had two shots off inside the first 10 minutes only to be denied by the offside flag and then a Rani Khedira block. Nordi Mukiele then fired a gilt-edged Leipzig chance over the bar before Werner finally made their pressure tell, latching onto Amadou Haidara's pass and finishing coolly. The Germany attacker then teed up Dani Olmo for a shot which deflected wide for a corner before Felix Brych's whistle for half-time went with Augsburg the side significantly more relieved to hear it.

Augsburg were nearly reduced to 10 men when Brych gave Philipp Max a red card for what looked like a foul in the home box against Mukiele, but after consultation with VAR the left-back was called back from halfway down the tunnel and allowed to continue. Heiko Herrlich then brought Sergio Cordova and Reece Oxford on for Alfred Finnbogason and Andre Hahn respectively; the former as fresh legs up front, the latter an attempt to shore things up in the middle. The changes helped, and Augsburg were soon back on level terms when Ruben Vargas reacted quickest to Max's deflected free-kick to blast an effort into the corner of Gulacsi deputy Yvon Mvogo's goal. Leipzig would have the final say, though, Werner converting after a long ball over the top from Angelino.
