Richter rescues Augsburg a point against Schalke

Schalke started brightly as Mark Uth sent a fifth-minute free-kick into the Augsburg wall, but their momentum was checked when the Cologne native was knocked unconscious following a clash of heads with Felix Uduokhai. The Schalke forward received treatment on the pitch for around 15 minutes, before being stretchered off in a stable condition. Can Bozdogan tested Rafal Gikiewicz within minutes of replacing Uth, but Augsburg wrested back the initiative through former Schalke midfielder Daniel Caligiuri, whose devilish free-kick was inadvertently headed into his own goal by Serdar. Bozdogan fired over from 18 yards, before news filtered through of Uth regaining consciousness, on his way to hospital, late in the first half.

Schalke spirits lifted, Benito Raman equalised within 10 minutes of the restart. Moments after dragging an effort wide, the Belgian picked off Carlos Gruezo's errant pass before calmly dinking over Gikiewicz. The contest took another turn for the worse from an Augsburg perspective when Florian Niederlechner was sent off for a second bookable offence. Nassim Boujellab compounded matters for the hosts just past the hour when he fired in from Serdar, despite the best efforts of Gikiewicz. Augsburg's Rani Khedira fluffed his lines from an almost identical position and Boujellab could do no better, and it proved a costly miss as substitute Richter met Michael Gregoritsch's cross in injury time to deny rock-bottom Schalke a first Bundesliga win since January.

• Schalke have not won in the league since beating Borussia Mönchengladbach on 17 January 2020. Tasmania Berlin hold the ignominious Bundesliga record for longest streak without a win (31 matches, 1965/66).
• Gregoritsch scored for Schalke - on his debut after joining the club on loan during the winter break - against Gladbach all those months ago.
• The Royal Blues took the lead in a game for only the second time this season.
• Boujellab scored his first Bundesliga goal on his 22nd top-flight appearance.
• Richter scored his second substitute Bundesliga goal, and first of the season.
• Augsburg are winless in five for the first time under Heiko Herrlich (D3, L2).
