Wout Weghorst was on target again as Wolfsburg consolidated third place in the Bundesliga with a comfortable 2-0 win at Augsburg, with Ridle Baku also scoring and having a further two ruled out for offside.

The defences were on top for much of the early stages of a tight encounter in Augsburg. The guests were asking most of the questions, but not getting any of the answers they wanted as Heiko Herrlich's men, playing with a changed back four, held firm. In fact, it was they who managed to break through enemy lines first with Daniel Caligiuri – who was switching wings regularly – cutting in from the right and testing Koen Casteels with an angled shot. Wolfsburg took the lead with their first shot on target five minutes later, though, with Weghorst dinking over Rafal Gikiewicz from Yannick Gerhardt's fine through-ball.
Baku thought he had doubled the Wolves' lead early in the second half only for a VAR review to chalk it off for offside, but he did not have to wait much longer to celebrate a valid goal. Weghorst's close-range effort was pushed away well by Gikiewicz, but the danger was not completely averted as the ball soon returned into the penalty area and, helped on by Weghorst, reached Baku, who slotted it in from a tight angle. Baku had another goal ruled out for offside when he diverted Maximilian Arnold's shot inside the post, as Wolfsburg continued to dominate on their way to a win which strengthens their challenge for UEFA Champions League football next season.
