Kimmich strikes late as Bayern beat Dortmund to win Supercup

Joshua Kimmich scored a late winner as Bayern Munich won the Supercup 3-2, after Borussia Dortmund had fought back from two goals down to equalise in the second half.

Bayern Munich 3-2 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 1-0
Tolisso (18'), 2-0 Müller (32'), 2-1 Brandt (39'), 2-2 Haaland (55'), 3-2 Kimmich (82')

Having both lost in the Bundesliga at the weekend, there was a sense of urgency about both teams in seeking to make amends early on. They exchanged half-chances in the first quarter of an hour, with Kimmich testing Marwin Hitz with a header and Marco Reus firing into the side netting, before Corentin Tolisso opened the scoring following a swift counter-attack, finishing on the rebound from close range after his initial shot had been saved by Hitz. Unbowed, BVB pushed for an equaliser, but Mahmoud Dahoud could only fire over, while Reus had a shot saved by Manuel Neuer. Thomas Müller showed them how it was done at the other end with a well-placed header at the back post to double Bayern’s lead, but Julian Brandt kept Dortmund in the game just before half-time, drilling in a superb shot past Neuer.

Thomas Meunier could have pulled Dortmund level within seconds of the restart when clean through on goal, but he fired over with only Neuer to beat. Haaland showed far greater composure in a similar situation shortly afterwards, collecting Thomas Delaney's pass to smash in the equaliser. Indeed, the 20-year-old could have given the visitors the lead with an opportunity that was almost a carbon-copy of his goal just five minutes later, but this time Neuer read his intentions and made a big save to keep the teams on level terms. The match appeared to be heading for a draw until Kimmich pounced on a loose ball in midfield late on, exchanging passes with Robert Lewandowski and flicking the ball into the net at the second attempt after Hitz blocked his first shot. The result means Bayern have now won five trophies in the last couple of months, adding the Supercup to their Bundesliga, DFB Cup, Champions League and UEFA Super Cup titles.
