Bayern too good for Dortmund in Der Klassiker

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Bayern Munich inflicted a bruising 4-0 defeat on Borussia Dortmund in interim coach Hansi Flick's first Bundesliga match in charge.

Bayern Munich 4-0 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 1-0 Lewandowski (17'), 2-0 Gnabry (47'), 3-0 Lewandowski (76'), 4-0 Hummels (o.g. 80')

Victorious against Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, Bayern set the tone inside 40 seconds when Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Bürki was forced to race off his line to deny Lewandowski a clear run at goal. Dortmund threatened sporadically coming in off the flanks, but the record champions were relentless as an attacking unit and deservedly went in front in the 17th minute. Serge Gnabry's initial cross was cleared only as far as Benjamin Pavard, whose audacious first-time return pass was dispatched with aplomb by a diving Lewandowski. Former Bayern defender Mats Hummels cleared off the line from Kingsley Coman following another fine piece of Lewandowski play, before Gnabry had an effort ruled out for offside. BVB coach Lucien Favre hooked Jadon Sancho in favour of Raphael Guerreiro with 10 minutes left of a largely one-sided first half, bookended by a shot in anger from Dortmund's Axel Witsel.

If Dortmund were guilty of being far too passive in the first period, they hadn't learned their lesson. The second half was barely two minutes old when Javi Martinez dissected the BVB defence with a raking long ball for Thomas Müller, who burst clear and crossed for Lewandowski. Bayern's No.9 missed his cue, but Gnabry was on hand to stick away the loose ball - the goal standing after a VAR review for a possible offside. Gnabry went within a whisker of applying the finishing touch to a superb run and cross from Alphonso Davies, before Lewandowski curled agonisngly wide with Bayern's next meaningful attack. Dortmund substitute Paco Alcacer spurned a glorious chance to reduce the arrears, and was made to pay as Müller teed up Lewandowski for his second of the match and 16th Bundesliga goal of the season. Hummels inadvertently turned in substitute Ivan Perisic's low cross to compound another chastening loss at the Allianz Arena for last season's Bundesliga runners-up.
