Harry Kane scored a hat-trick, including one from inside his own half, as Bayern Munich recovered from Joshua Kimmich's early red card to run riot with an 8-0 win over nine-man Darmstadt.

All eyes were on Manuel Neuer making his return after almost a year on the sidelines, but the referee was focused on the action and on Kimmich, who’s day was over after only a handful of minutes. The Bayern midfielder lost the ball to Marvin Mehlem just outside his own area and hauled the Darmstadt player down as he bore down on Neuer’s goal. Similarly at the other end, Klaus Gjasula was sent off for a foul on Konrad Laimer. Initially, the referee pointed to the spot and showed only yellow, but a VAR review showed the contact was outside the box, although the colour of the card changed to leave both teams with 10 men. Kingsley Coman went closest to giving Bayern the lead before the next twist in the plot, with Matej Maglica becoming the third player to be sent off in an almost carbon copy of Darmstadt’s first red card, this time Kane felled on the edge of the box. Bayern thought they had taken the lead just before the break when Leroy Sané struck, but the goal was ruled out for offside with VAR having a busy first half in Munich.
Only 19 players returned to the field at the start of the second half for the first time in Bundesliga history, and Bayern wasted no time in making their one-man advantage count. Noussair Mazraoui whipped in a low cross, which Kane dived in to meet with his head and turn in past Marcel Schuhen from close range. Coman missed the chance to make it two moments later, but Bayern were clearly in the driving seat and Sané supplied the cushion they had been looking for, tucking in Laimer’s low cross for his seventh Bundesliga goal of the season. Jamal Musiala put the result beyond doubt before the hour was up, guiding a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner from 20 yards out. Sané then equalled his haul for the whole of last season, sending a dipping shot past Schuhen’s flailing right hand from Coman’s pass. The best was yet to come, though, as Kane submitted a strong candidate for goal of the season, sending a shot over Schuhen from several yards inside his own half, before substiute Thomas Müller turned the next Mazraoui cross in for his first goal of the campaign. Müller then provided his second assist of the game, returning a pass for Musiala to put Bayern into seventh heaven. Kane then put the cherry on top, completing his hat-trick from Sané's pass to make it eight late on.
