Sargis Adamyan scored a brace on his full Bundesliga debut as Hoffenheim beat Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena for the first time in their history.
Goals: 0-1 Adamyan (54'), 1-1 Lewandowski (73'), 1-2 Adamyan (79')
Bayern would have been forgiven for feeling something of a UEFA Champions League hangover after their inspired 7-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur in midweek. The Bundesliga leaders still enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in a keenly contested first half, but it was Hoffenheim who created the clearer-cut chances. Only Jerome Boateng’s superb last-ditch challenge prevented Adamyan from pulling the trigger when through on goal inside four minutes, while Stefan Posch could only fire tamely at Manuel Neuer following a lapse in concentration in the Bayern midfield. Bayern’s best spell fell around the 25-minute mark when Serge Gnabry had a goal ruled out for an offside decision against Robert Lewandowski, and Corentin Tolisso blazed over on the turn.
There were signs towards the end of the first half that Bayern were beginning to take control, but Hoffenheim refused to back down. Robert Skov fired an early warning short down the throat of Neuer, before the visitors made it a case of third time lucky with the opening goal. Dennis Geiger picked the pockets of Tolisso and fed Adamyan, who squeezed an exquisite finish past Neuer at his near post. Thomas Müller and Ivan Perisic entered the fray for Bayern, but Hoffenheim stuck to their guns as Posch drove narrowly wide. Gnabry and Lewandowski failed to find the target from promising positions, before Lewandowski made amends with a well-taken header from Müller’s fine ball to level. Bayern appeared to have their tails up, but Adamyan supplied the sting with a sensational match-winning finish 11 minutes from time.
