Bayern Munich and Manchester United are to meet again, 20 years on from the most dramatic of UEFA Champions League finals, in a rematch involving the two clubs' legends.

On a memorable night in Barcelona on 26 May 1999, two late goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw the Red Devils grab victory from the jaws of defeat in one of the most memorable European finals in history.

Lothar Matthäus, who was on the losing side that night when he had been so close to getting his hands on the trophy, is looking forward to his chance to gain revenge two decades later. "It's going to be a really great event and we're already looking forward to it," he said on the Bundesliga's record champions' website.

Matthäus (front r.) cannot wait for the opportunity to gain revenge for the 1999 final defeat when he lines up for Bayern Munich's legends against Manchester United in May.

He and Giovane Elber, who missed that game due to a knee injury, have already confirmed their participation in the game, which will be played at Old Trafford 20 years to the day since the original meeting. Other legends on the Bayern roster include Owen Hargreaves, who played for both clubs during his career, Bixente Lizarazu and Carsten Jancker.

"I'm really looking forward to what will be a special day at Old Trafford," said United's legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is making a one-off return to the dugout for the occasion. "It will be great to catch up with some familiar faces and a great opportunity to support the work of Manchester United Foundation."

Many players involved on that memorable night, including referee Pierluigi Collina, will take to the Old Trafford pitch for a rematch – dubbed as a treble reunion for the United team which won an unprecedented three trophies that season, like Bayern did in 2013 – a week before the 2019 Champions League final is due to be held in Madrid.

Bayern's current crop of talent face Liverpool in the last 16 this week, with United having lost the first leg of their last-16 tie 2-0 at home to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
