Record Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have officially announced the opening of a football school in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, aimed at aiding the development of the game in the northeast African country and wider continent.

The ceremonial launch of the FC Bayern Munich School - which will be run in association with the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) - was made on the sidelines of an Under 17 tournament held by the Bavarians in Addis Ababa.

At the heart of the school’s operation will be an “ongoing exchange of experience”, which will primarily see Bayern youth coaches travelling to the city to aid the development of local players.

“With the FC Bayern Football School in Addis Ababa we are opening our first football school of this type in Africa,” said Jörg Wacker, the club’s executive board member for Internationalisation and Strategy.

“This gives us the opportunity to bring our fans in Africa even closer to FC Bayern and, with the help of our expertise, make an important contribution to the development of football in Ethiopia.”

In the process, Ethiopia becomes the sixth country outside of Germany where Bayern have created an educational facility, joining Japan, USA, China, Thailand and Singapore.
