Dani Olmo scored a hat-trick as RB Leipzig picked up the first piece of silverware of the 2023/24 season thanks to their 3-0 Supercup triumph over Bayern Munich, for whom new signing Harry Kane made his debut.

Kane’s arrival dominated the day’s football coverage but Leipzig were unfazed by the England captain’s presence on the bench at kick-off and soon showed they meant business. After Lois Openda tested Sven Ulreich within a matter of seconds, the visitors went ahead in the third minute when David Raum’s free-kick from the left wasn’t properly cleared, allowing Dani Olmo to sidefoot in from close range. Bayern responded well, however, and created a number of presentable chances for Serge Gnabry and, in particular, Mathys Tel, but a combination of wayward finishing and some fine saves from Janis Blaswich in the Leipzig goal preserved the away side’s lead. They punished Bayern for their profligacy shortly before the interval when Olmo collected a Timo Werner pass with his back to goal, executed a mind-boggling spin to leave Matthijs de Ligt stranded before poking through Ulreich’s legs.
Thomas Tuchel made three changes at the break, opting for a more attacking formation with Kingsley Coman coming on for Konrad Laimer, while Minjae Kim was handed his competitive debut. Tel was thwarted by Blaswich again as the hosts went on the front foot, with Musiala’s follow-up effort blocked. The moment Bayern fans had been waiting for arrived in the 63rd minute when Kane came off the bench to a huge roar from the Allianz Arena crowd. They were silenced just moments later, however, when Noussair Mazraoui conceded a penalty for handball, and Olmo completed his hat-trick with an unerring effort low past Ulreich. Bayern continued to push forward, inspired perhaps by the spate of late goals in last year’s Supercup, and Mazraoui went close with a header that grazed the side netting. Benjamin Sesko kept Ulreich alert at the other end but there were to be no further goals as Leipzig claimed the Supercup for the first time ever.
