Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer is set for an extended period on the sidelines after the goalkeeper suffered a setback in his recovery from a calf injury.

The 38-year-old sustained the knock in the first-leg of Bayern's successful UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen on 11 March. He subsequently missed his club's 3-2 defeat against Bochum and the 1-1 draw away against Union Berlin, with 21-year-old back-up Jonas Urbig stepping in to cover with his first senior appearances for the Bavarian giants.

Bayern announced that Neuer had been working on his comeback from the muscle issue when he suffered the "reaction" that will keep him out of action for the time being. The club also recently reported that Urbig had returned to headquarters after picking up a foot injury while on international duty with the Germany U21s.

Jonas Urbig (l.) made his Bayern debut when coming on to replace the injured Neuer against Bayer Leverkusen in the UCL.

Neuer - an 11-time Bundesliga champion - has been unfortunate with injuries this season, with the keeper previously laid low with rib and thigh issues in 2024-25. Bayern's quest for the Bundesliga title recommences after the international break with a Matchday 27 encounter at home to St. Pauli on 29 March.
