Bayern Munich have broken their own record for scoring in the most consecutive Bundesliga games by finding the back of the net for a 66th successive match thanks to Robert Lewandowski's early strike against Cologne on Matchday 19.
Robert Lewandowski's ninth-minute goal set the new Bayern and Bundesliga benchmark, that, fittingly, dates back to the champions' 4-1 win against the same opponents and on the same ground on 16 February 2020.
That was on Matchday 22 of the 2019/20 campaign, since when Bayern have found the back of the net in every top flight game and scored a total of 200 goals in the process.
It makes for an average of three goals per game across their 66-matchday streak that betters their own 65-game record that stood from April 2012 to April 2014.
Their previous best saw Bayern collect 188 goals at an average of 2.9 goals per game and was overseen by Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola.
Current head coach Julian Nagelsmann's side have picked up where Hansi Flick's charges left off and their efforts since Bayern's last blank - a goalless draw with RB Leipzig on 2 September 2020 - outstrip those of Heynckes' and Guardiola's teams.
Despite their increased number of goals, Bayern's 51 victories out of their pre-Cologne 65 matches of the existing run (W51, D7, L7) are lower than their 57 wins out of 65 from 2012 to 2014, when they lost just once (W57, D7, L1).
Bayern's Hinrunde return of 56 goals was a record for the most in the first half of a Bundesliga season and Nagelsmann's men will now be gunning for the highest scorers in a single campaign.
It is another league best held already by the 30-time champions from Bavaria, who hit a whopping 101 in 34 matches of the 1971–72 campaign.
