Bayern Munich sign England's Eric Dier

Bayern Munich have completed the signing of England international Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur.

Dier, 29, has put pen to paper on a deal through to the end of the 2023/24 season, plus the option for an additional year, with the record champions, where he will be reunited with Harry Kane.

"This move is a dream come true for me, because as a child you want to play for a club like Bayern one day," said Dier, a versatile defensive player, who can operate in a holding midfield role, at centre-back and even on the right-hand side of the defence. "I want to help the team with my versatility in defence. I’m really looking forward to my new teammates and the fans at the Allianz Arena, which in my eyes is one of the best stadiums in the world."

Dier had been on the Tottenham books since 2014, playing in a team that included Kane until the latter's summer 2023 transfer to Bayern, but fell down the pecking order under new coach Ange Postecoglou and featured just four times during the first half of 2023/24.

All told, he made 364 competitive appearances for the North London outfit, whilst also earning 49 senior England caps in that time. The Cheltenham native previously played for Portugal's Sporting Lisbon, having worked his way up through the club's various youth ranks before making his professional debut in November 2012.

"The Allianz Arena is this way, mate!" Dier (l.) has already played in the same team as Harry Kane (r.) for club and country.

Christoph Freund, Bayern's sporting director said: “We’re pleased we’ve been able to sign Eric Dier. He’s long been in our thinking for this transfer window. Eric will be a valuable part of our defence. His sporting abilities and international experience will help the team both on the pitch and in the changing room.”

Dier could make his Bundesliga debut when second-placed Bayern host Hoffenheim on Friday. He is set to become the fourth English player to represent the 32-time Bundesliga champions, after Kane, Omar Richards and Owen Hargreaves.
