Bayern win ensures Bundesliga reigns supreme in Europe
Bayern Munich made it a clean sweep for Bundesliga clubs involved in UEFA competition with their 3-0 win away to English Premier League club Chelsea.
With RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund also victorious in their first-leg fixtures, and Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt doing the business in the UEFA Europa League last-32, Bayern's triumph means it is the first time since 1989 that six Bundesliga teams have all recorded first-leg wins in knockout fixtures.
Dortmund set the tone, thanks in no small part to Erling Haaland's match-winning brace in their home leg against French champions PSG. Timo Werner settled matters from the penalty spot away to Tottenham, while Robert Lewandowski was instrumental to Bayern's win at Chelsea, scoring his tournament-leading 11th Champions League goal of the season.
Leipzig host Tottenham on 10 March, Dortmund take on Paris in the French capital on 11 March and Bayern welcome Chelsea to the Allianz Arena on 18 March. Should they progress, it would be the first time in the Champions League era that three Bundesliga clubs have reached the quarter-finals.
Leverkusen, Wolfsburg and Frankfurt are also in pole position to reach the Europa League last-16. Kai Havertz and Lucas Alario fired Leverkusen to a 2-1 win over Porto, with Wolfsburg beating Malmo by the same scoreline, and Frankfurt thrashing Red Bull Salzburg 4-1. The Bundesliga trio play their away legs on 27 February.
Bayern are the last Bundesliga team to win the Champions League (2012/13); Schalke lifted the now defunct UEFA Cup - the precursor to the Europa League - in 1996/97.
