Bayern's rivals have celebrated some rare big wins against the Bavarians this century.

26.01.2002: Schalke 5-1 Bayern Munich

Ebbe Sand and Emile Mpenza were the strike pair that put Schalke on course for a famous win back in January 2002 - with two goals within a matter of moments in the 34th and 35th minutes. Bayern defender Michael Tarnat was sent off for fouling Andreas Möller before the interval. It only got worse for Ottmar Hitzeld's then Champions League holders and Bundesliga champions. Mehmet Scholl's goal gave a short glimmer of hope (49') before Jörg Böhme (54'), Marco van Hoogdalen (75') and Niels Oude Kamphuis (90+1') sealed a sensational victory for the previous season's runners-up.

20.09.2008: Bayern Munich 2-5 Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen boasted a glittering side at the time they made it an Oktoberfest day to forget for champions Bayern in Munich. Goals from Markus Rosenberg (30') and Naldo (45') put the visitors ahead after a fairly even first half, but the Green-Whites pulled away after the break. Mesut Özil (54'), Claudio Pizarro (59') and Rosenberg (67') smashed Bremen into a five-goal advantage before Tim Borowski - who had two spells at Bremen - saved some face for Bayern with two consolation goals (71', 85'). Bremen would go on to reach the UEFA Cup final that same season.

04.04.2009: VfL Wolfsburg 5-1 FC Bayern Munich

While there would be another eight matches remaining after this win in April, the big success over Bayern is seen as the crowning touch on Wolfsburg's legendary 2008/09 title win. It remained even at the break after goals from Christian Gentner (44') and Luca Toni (45'), but the second half saw Felix Magath's side run away with it. Edin Dzeko (63', 66') and Grafite (74') had already sealed the win by the time the Brazilian pulled off a brilliant goal he would forever be associated with. After weaving his way around the entire Bayern defence, the attacker backheeled the ball into the net. Felix Magath was feeling so confident he brought his reserve goalkeeper, Andre Lenz, on in 89th minute.

02.11.2019: Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 FC Bayern Munich

Niko Kovac brought his Bayern side to face his former club Eintracht in November 2019 for what weould be a very unhappy return. Bayern were up against it as soon as Jerome Boateng was dismissed for denying Gonçalo Paciência a clear goalscoring opportunity in the ninth minute. After goals from Filip Kostic (25') and Djibril Sow (33'), Robert Lewandowski (37') pulled one back, but the ten-men of Munich had little prospect of clawing their way level. David Abraham (49'), Martin Hinteregger (61') and Paciência (85') sealed the thumping win - and the departure of Niko Kovac for Hansi Flick, who went on to guide Bayern to a Bundesliga, DFB Cup and Champions League treble that season.

09.12.2023: Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 FC Bayern Munich

The champions had made an unbeaten start to the Bundesliga - and must have been confident of maintaining it in Frankfurt days after the hosts crashed out of the DFB Cup at the hands of Saarbrücken (who had also knocked Bayern out of the competition). Bayern faced an Eintracht side eager to make amends though - and they blew Bayern away with a display of clinical finishing, with 1,61 xGoals actually landing them five! Omar Marmoush (12'), Éric Dina Ebimbe (31', 50'), Hugo Larsson (36') and Ansgar Knauff (60') made for the sensational result at the Deutsche Bank Park. Joshua Kimmich's stunning consolation was ultimately worth very little. After an otherwise sensational start to the season and a strong Champions League campaign to date, Bayern can hope the drubbing is a good omen in disguise after they put a similar 5-1 loss in 2019/20 behind them to enjoy a historic campaign.
