Bochum belied their lowly standing in a blistering start at the Ruhr Stadion. Vasilios Lampropoulos and Christopher Antwi-Adjei had already gone close when Thomas Letsch's side got the goal their fearless opening gambit deserved. Simon Zoller split the Gladbach defence with a superb pass into the box for Antwi-Adjei to finish past 20-year-old Bundesliga debutant Jan Olschowsky. Bochum were celebrating again moments later as Philipp Hofmann capitalised on a mix-up between Olschowsky and Nico Elvedi to add a second goal. Ramy Bensebaini missed the chance to reduce the arrears late in the half when he headed Christoph Kramer's cross off target. Bochum almost made them pay with their next attack, but Philipp Förster fired over from 11 yards.

There was another huge let-off for Gladbach early in the second half. Antwi-Adjei and Förster were the architects, but Ivan Ordets' header came back off the crossbar. The visitors were given a lifeline just past the hour mark when Jonas Hofmann forced a defensive mistake. Marcus Thuram squared the loose ball to Alassane Plea, who steered a tidy finish past Manuel Riemann from inside the area. Zoller went within a whisker of turning in Antwi-Adjei's seek-and-destroy cross, shortly before the linesman's flag ruled out Anthony Losilla's lobbed finish for offside. VAR intervened again in the closing stages, chalking off a Bensebaini equaliser as Bochum climbed to within two points of safety with one final round of fixtures to go before the 2022 World Cup break.
