VfB Stuttgart left-back Borna Sosa has told bundesliga.com there is a possibility that he could represent Germany at UEFA Euro 2020 this summer.
Sosa has been one of the breakout stars of the 2020/21 Bundesliga campaign, his nine assists meaning he has laid on more goals than any other defender in the German top flight.
The 23-year-old Zagreb native has turned out for Croatia 56 times up until U21 level, but he could qualify for Die Mannschaft through his mother Vesna, who was born in Berlin. "We can confirm that Borna Sosa has accepted German citizenship," VfB Stuttgart told Sky Sports.
Sosa got another 90 minutes under his belt as Stuttgart beat Augsburg 2-1 on Friday, and he confirmed after the game that a switch in international allegiance could be on the agenda.
"I had contact with [DFB national team director] Oliver Bierhoff," he said. "We spoke about me, but we didn't only speak about the Euros that are coming now. We also spoke about my future here, if I play for Germany, how it will look and stuff like this, so I did have contact with him."
When asked to reaffirm if he would be an option for Germany at Euro 2020, his answer was unequivocal.
"Yeah, there is a possibility," he confirmed.
Sosa could now compete with Atalanta's Robin Gosens, RB Leipzig's Marcel Halstenberg and Philipp Max of PSV Eindhoven for a berth on Germany's left-hand side.
