Bundesliga
Erling Haaland played his first 45 minutes of pre-season as Borussia Dortmund were beaten 2-0 by Athletic Bilbao in St. Gallen on Saturday.
Borussia Dortmund 0-2 Athletic Bilbao
Goals: 0-1 Raul Garcia (pen. 50'), 0-2 Vivian (57')
As it happened:
FULL-TIME
With the rain pelting down, Dortmund will have been the happier of the teams to hear the final whistle. It was a difficult afternoon for them, with a few injuries to worry Marco Rose, but at least Erling Haaland made his first appearance of pre-season for BVB!
80' MORE CHANGES FOR DORTMUND
Another injury-enforced change for Dortmund, with Bynoe-Gittens coming off not long after he took to the field. With Reyna pulling up before kick-off, and in view of an increasingly likely defeat, it has not been a good day at the office for Marco Rose and his team today.
79' STORMY IN ST. GALLEN
The dark clouds lurking around Kybunpark have decided to empty their contents, with the rain pouring down here. Just 10 minutes to get through in torrential rain.
75' VESGA BOOKED
The second yellow card for a Bilbao player after a dangerous foul from behind on Mahmoud Dahoud. Not much friendliness in that tackle, to be fair.
70' ANOTHER BILBAO CHANCE!
Schulz is caught napping and that is almost the third goal for Bilbao, but Bürki makes up for his earlier mistakes by making a fine save to deny Berenguer. Dortmund have, unfortunately, not really turned up for this second half.
62' WOLF CARRIED OFF
Bad news for Dortmund with Marius Wolf carried off the field, unable to put any weight on his left foot. His involvement in this game has been little over 15 minutes, with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens coming on for him.
57' SECOND FOR BILBAO
A set piece leads to the second Bilbao goal, with Dortmund's defence all over the place as Daniel Vivian ghosts in at the far post to meet a free-kick and double the Spanish team's lead.
53' TIGGES CHANCE
A good opportunity for substitute Tigges, but his shot goes straight at the Bilbao goalkeeper.
50' PENALTY BILBAO!
Raul Garcia scores from the spot after Bürki came off his line and got more of Villalibre with his punch than the ball. The referee showed the Dortmund custodian a yellow card, and worse was to follow as Bilbao opened the scoring.
ATTENDANCE
The official attendance figure has been announced: 3,527 are in Kybunpark in St. Gallen.
SECOND HALF KICK-OFF!
Bürki, Tigges and Wolf are all on for Dortmund, with Kobel, Haaland and Gürpüz making way. Meanwhile, Bilbao have practically changed their entire team for this second 45 minutes.
HALF TIME Dortmund 0-0 Bilbao
A good start for Bilbao, but Dortmund got back into the game well and had the biggest chance of the game which Erling Haaland is still scratching his head about, wondering how it did not go in. The Spanish side almost snatched the lead late in the half, but it's goalless at the break.
45' KOBEL SPARES PAPADOPOULOS' BLUSHES
Almost an own goal for the young Dortmund defender Papadopoulos, but Gregor Kobel makes a fine save to turn the ball behind for Bilbao's eighth corner of this first half.
43' HAALAND AUTOGRAPH!
A kid has entered the field of play and raced across to Erling Haaland, who has obliged in signing his shirt! There are several thousand fans here in St. Gallen, following this friendly.
38' DAHOUD HEADER
A corner for Dortmund brings some danger, with Mahmoud Dahoud getting his head to the ball, but not enough power or direction behind it.
32' DRINKS BREAK
A chance to watch replays of how Dortmund did not take the lead for us, and for the players to take on some liquids pitchside.
30' DORTMUND CHANCE!
How did that not go in?! Answers on a postcard, please. Marco Reus bursts through and his angled shot takes a deflection and stops agonisingly inches in front of the goalline. Haaland comes racing in, thinking he has the easiest of tap-ins, but a Bilbao defender on the line blocks his shot and the danger is cleared.
24' BILBAO CHANGE
Nico Williams comes off already, apparently carrying a bit of a knock, and Nico Serrano replaces him in the first change of the match
19' HAALAND WAITING
Erling Haaland has had a few touches of the ball, but unfortunately for Dortmund, these have almost all been in their own half so far. Even Haaland is not likely to be a threat in his own half, though Leverkusen's Patrik Schick may have a point to make about scoring from distance. Nevertheless, Marco Rose will be hoping to see much more of Haaland in enemy territory.
10' ANOTHER BILBAO CHANCE
Bilbao are breaking through the Dortmund defence with a little bit too much ease for Marco Rose's liking, with Inaki Williams getting into a good shooting position, but dragging his effort wide.
7' NUNEZ HEADER
Another corner for Bilbao and Nunez heads wide. Plenty of warnings for this inexperienced Dortmund defence.
5' CORNERS FOR BILBAO
A good start from the Spanish side, who force two early corners and carve out an opportunity which goes begging.
KICK-OFF
We are under way in St. Gallen, with Dortmund kicking off.
REYNA OUT!
Bad news before kick-off for Dortmund, with Gio Reyna picking up an injury. His place in the starting XI has been taken by Göktan Gürpüz.
WELCOME!
Welcome to St. Gallen for this pre-season friendly between Dortmund and Bilbao!
Team news:
Haaland was a late arrival in the Dortmund camp due to international commitments at the start of June, but now has a good week of pre-season training behind him. The Norway international, who turned 21 on Tuesday, scored 41 competitive goals last season as BVB finished third and lifted the DFB Pokal. After watching his side beat Gießen 2-0 and lose 3-1 to Bochum, there should be no holding back one of the most feared and revered forwards on the planet. New signing Gregor Kobel starts in goal after keeping a clean sheet in the first half of the Bochum defeat, while Julian Brandt furthers his claim for regular first-team minutes under new coach Marco Rose after impressing in both fixtures. The likes of Gio Reyna, Marco Reus and Mahmoud Dahoud complete a strong Dortmund line-up. US defender Lennard Maloney also starts, while 16-year-old Abdoulaye Kamara could also have a part to play after making the switch from Paris Saint-Germain.
Bilbao may be wishing goalkeeper Unai Simon wasn't on Olympics duty with Spain. Little over five months ago, Haaland scored four goals over two legs to help Dortmund reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at the expense of La Liga's Sevilla. Jokin Ezkieta will likely deputise between the goal posts for an Athletic outfit that lost their pre-season opener to Switzerland's St. Gallen 2-1, before edging Dinamo Kiev on Tuesday through Inaki Williams' solitary goal. Los Leones, coached by Marcelino, ranked 10th out of 20 clubs in La Liga last season, whilst inadvertently becoming the first team in history to lose two Copa Del Rey finals in the same calendar year. Captain Raul Garcia scored a team-leading 10 goals from midfield in all competitions in 2020/21, with winger Alex Berenguer top for league goals with eight. Save a handful of promoted youth players, defender Alex Petxa is the only new face at the club so far this summer transfer window.
