Lewandowski double as Bayern win Supercup!

The first half was a blink-and-you-miss it affair, with chances coming and going seemingly by the minute. Bayern targeted BVB right-back Felix Passlack early on, robbing him of possession three times with their relentless high press to set up presentable scoring chances, but neither Kingsley Coman (twice) nor Müller managed to hit the target. Dortmund were also dangerous going forward, though, and Bayern needed a world-class stop from Manuel Neuer to deny Marco Reus following a sensational through-ball from Jude Bellingham. Reus, Müller, Lewandowski and Erling Haaland all went close thereafter, while 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko had a goal disallowed for offside before Lewandowski thundered in the opening goal with a powerful header from Serge Gnabry’s cross to give the visitors the lead at the break.

Bayern doubled their lead shortly after the restart as Passlack was dragged out of position, allowing Alphonso Davies to stride to the byline and cross into the middle for Lewandowski. His back-heel was blocked by Gregor Kobel but the rebound fell kindly for Müller to tap in from close range. There was nothing fortuitous about Dortmund’s riposte, though, Bellingham teeing up Reus to bend a stunning shot past Neuer from the edge of the area. Just when it looked like BVB might stage a fightback, having been whipped into a frenzy by the home crowd, they conceded again when Manuel Akanji was too casual in possession at the back. Substitute Corentin Tolisso intercepted and poked the ball into Lewandowski’s path, and he gratefully accepted the gift when one-on-one with Kobel. The pace of the game remained frenetic until the final whistle, with both teams seeking to add to the scoreline, but there were no further goals as Bayern claimed the Supercup trophy for a ninth time.

• This was the ninth time Dortmund and Bayern have met in the Supercup. Dortmund won their first meeting in 1989. Bayern have won five to BVB's three since.
• Lewandowski is the top scorer in Supercups with seven goals. Müller has the next-most with five.
• Lewandowski bagged a Europe-leading 48 goals in all competitions last term. Haaland was just seven behind with 41.
• With three goals, Reus is Dortmund's deadliest player in this fixture.
• Nagelsmann picked up his first piece of major silverware as a coach with this triumph - his first win since succeeding Hansi Flick.
• Bayern have won this competition a record nine times in total. Dortmund have the next most Supercup triumphs with six.
