Modeste snatches last-gasp Klassiker draw for Dortmund

Anthony Modeste came off the bench to provide a goal and an assist, including a 95th-minute equaliser, to salvage a 2-2 draw for Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich.

Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Bayern Munich
Goals: 0-1
Goretzka 33' (assist: Musiala), 0-2 Sane (53'), 1-2 Moukoko 74' (assist: Modeste), 2-2 Modeste 90'+5 (assist: Schlotterbeck)
Sent off: Coman (90')

In the build-up to the game, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl commented that, “Experience tells us that these direct match-ups have an impact on the standings come the end of the season.” As such, BVB began in determined mood, eager to compete with Bayern in the hope of producing a potentially season-defining result. It was a midfield battle to begin with – three yellow cards were awarded in the opening 15 minutes – but the first meaningful shot of the game did not arrive until Raphael Guerreiro stung Manuel Neuer’s palms with an angled drive in the 31st minute. Bayern’s first attempt arrived moments later – and they scored from it too. Sadio Mane released Jamal Musiala into space on the left and he picked out the unmarked Leon Goretzka lurking on the edge of the area. The Germany international had time and space to place a low shot into the bottom corner. Donyell Malen went close as Dortmund tried to muster a response, but his strike from Julian Brandt’s pass was comfortably kept out by Neuer.

BVB went on the front foot early in the second half in a bid to catch Bayern napping, and they had a couple of openings for substitute Marius Wolf and Guerreiro, but the former was thwarted by Neuer while the latter fizzed a shot over the bar. Sane showed them how it was done just moments later, collecting a pass in a central position outside the area and firing a long-range effort past Alex Meyer and into the net. Moukoko gave Dortmund hope of a comeback in the closing stages with a fine finish from Modeste’s pass, and the 34-year-old should have equalised as the final whistle ticked nearer, but he miscued a close-range finish from Karim Adeyemi’s pinpoint cross. The Frenchman made amends in stoppage time, however, with Bayern down to 10 men following Kingsley Coman's dismissal for a second yellow card, heading in the equaliser at the back post from Nico Schlotterbeck's cross to send the Signal Iduna Park into raptures and earn his side a valuable point.
