Moukoko brace as Dortmund beat Bochum

Dortmund went into the game as clear favourites and wasted little time in justifying that tag in front of a packed-out Signal Iduna Park. There were just eight minutes on the clock when Moukoko – still only 17 remember – outmuscled Ivan Ordets when battling for possession before turning and firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner from 25 yards. BVB went 2-0 up moments later after Donyell Malen was tripped in the box, with Reyna coolly sending Manuel Riemann the wrong way from the penalty spot. There was very little to see from Bochum in the final third, with Philipp Hofmann’s eye-catching lob that was ruled out for offside their only noteworthy attack. Moukoko produced a lob of his own on the stroke of half-time, spying Riemann off his line to delicately chip into the empty net from long range to give the hosts a comfortable lead at the break.

Bochum came out swinging in the second period, eager to get a foothold in the game, and they very nearly pulled a goal back straight away when Jordi Osei-Tuti scurried clear of the home rearguard, only to see his shot beat Gregor Kobel but hit the base of the post before being cleared. With a tricky game at Wolfsburg coming up on Tuesday, Dortmund were content to shift down a couple of gears and didn’t have the same attacking purpose as they had before the interval. Indeed, the closest they came was a direct free-kick from Julian Brandt that whistled just the wrong side of the post. There was little goalmouth action to speak of thereafter, although the return to action of captain Marco Reus crowned a comfortable afternoon’s work for the hosts.

• Moukoko scored his first ever brace in the Bundesliga, with both goals the first he has netted in a first half.
• The teenager now has six league goals in 2022/23, making him BVB’s leading scorer.
• Reyna scored his first ever Bundesliga penalty, taking his overall tally to eight.
• That means he has surpassed his father Claudio's total; Reyna senior struck seven times in the 1990s for Wolfsburg.
• Reus made his comeback from injury here following three weeks on the sidelines.
• Dortmund are unbeaten in their last five home matches, collecting 13 points from a possible 15.
