Bochum beat Dortmund in thriller despite Haaland hat-trick

Dortmund went into the game knowing that a positive result would be enough to secure a runners-up spot behind champions Bayern Munich but Marco Rose's side made the worst possible start as Bochum raced in front. Moments after Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, the 17-year-old England youth international making his first Bundesliga start, saw an effort comfortably saved by Manuel Riemann, the visitors took a third-minute lead as Takuma Asano's chipped cross was headed home by Sebastian Polter. And Bochum doubled their lead five minutes later as Gerrit Holtmann curled home a sumptuous effort from the edge of the Dortmund box. The hosts found a way back into the game when Haaland converted from the penalty spot and a second Bochum handball in the box then allowed Haaland to level things up, again from 12 yards.

The second half picked up where the first left off, with both teams pushing forward in numbers to try and claim victory. Bochum pressed high and caused panic in the Dortmund defence but the ball wouldn't quite drop for them. At the other end, Bynoe-Gittens was impressive for the home side, while Haaland was denied a third Bundesliga hat-trick by another excellent Riemann save. The Norwegian would eventually get his treble, though, as Bynoe-Gittens superbly fed Marco Reus on the left of the Bochum box before the Dortmund captain squared for Haaland to bundle in at the near post. It looked to have sealed all three points - and second place - for Dortmund, but Bochum were on level terms in stunning fashion with nine minutes to play. Jürgen Locadia grabbed the goal, bringing the ball down beautifully in the box, before turning Manuel Akanji and firing home to make it 3-3. And they clinched victory with a spot-kick - for a third handball - as Milos Pantovic planted home with five minutes to go.

• Haaland's 19th and 20th Bundesliga goals of the campaign - and first against Bochum - means he has now scored against 18 of the 20 teams he has faced in the Bundesliga. Only VfB Stuttgart and Arminia Bielefeld have kept him out.
• It was the 23rd time that Haaland has scored twice or more times in a Bundesliga match.
• Dortmund have found the back of the net in each of their previous 33 home league games.
• Rose's side have been awarded 10 Bundesliga penalties this season and converted all of them.
• Bochum had lost on their last eight top-flight trips to Dortmund, but now have their first win at the Signal Iduna Park since a 1-0 victory on 13 September 1998.
• Polter was also on target in the reverse fixture and has now done a personal double over Dortmund.
