Dortmund's upcoming schedule

On Thursday 19 June head coach Kovač put his players through their paces once again at their training HQ in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. On Friday they will take an approximately three-hour flight to Cincinnati, Ohio for their Matchday 2 assignment against Mamelodi Sundowns at 12pm local time (6pm CEST) on Saturday 21 June.

BVB are taking a team of 28 players to the US, including newest signing Jobe Bellingham, wearing the number 77. American duo Gio Reyna and Cole Campbell are also included, plus Jamie Gittens and Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka. Two big absentees are Nico Schlotterbeck after his knee injury in the latter weeks of the season and captain Emre Can, who's suffering with an adductor problem. Midfielder Salih Özcan has also stayed at home.

Beier back in training

After having already returned to individual training, Maximilian Beier rejoined his teammates as a part of a larger squad training session on 7 June. The young forward, after finding himself in a patch of really impressive form in March, sustained an injury in the Bundesliga showdown against Gladbach in April, missing the final few games of the season as a result.

No time for sightseeing

Just one day after their arrival, Niko Kovač will run BVB's first stateside training session on site. The site in question is the training facilities of MLS club Inter Miami, for whom legend of the game Lionel Messi plays. The club co-owned by David Beckham's are also taking part in the Club World Cup and will play the tournament's opening match against Egyptian side Al Ahly.

Departure date: 13 June

Following a short holiday break after the end of the Bundesliga campaign, BVB resumed training on 2 June ahead of boarding the plane to North America eleven days later. The Black-Yellows will set up camp in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Dortmund have recalled defender Soumaïla Coulibaly early, who had been loaned out to Stade Brest, so that he can strengthen the squad that will be travelling to the USA on 13 June.

Registration deadlines

FIFA have created an additional transfer window for the Club World Cup in which clubs can register players. The squad lists for the tournament must be submitted by 10 June. By then, it will be clear which players will be travelling to the USA. If no agreement can be reached regarding a early transfers before then, participating clubs will also be able to replace and add players during a restricted in-competition period from 27 June to 3 July within a set limit and according to specific limitations, according to FIFA's rulings.

A Klassiker on the cards?

With both Bayern and Dortmund playing in the Club World Cup, there is potential for another instalment of Der Klassiker. However, the earliest the two Bundesliga teams can meet is in the semi-finals, and that's only if one finishes first and the other second in their respective groups. If both finish first or both finish second, the would be unable to meet one another before the final.

Going the distance

After the group stage, the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout phase, which will commence with the round of 16. The round of 16 will take place from 28 June to 1 July, followed by the quarter-finals on 4 and 5 July and the semi-finals on 8 and 9 July. The grand final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey will kick off on 13 July at 9pm CET.
