Reyna and Haaland get BVB back to winning ways

Gio Reyna became the first 17-year-old to provide three assists in a Bundesliga game since data collection began, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, as Borussia Dortmund swept past Freiburg to return to winning ways on Matchday 3.

Borussia Dortmund 4-0 Freiburg
Goals: 1-0 Haaland (31'), 1-0 Can (47'), 3-0 Haaland (66'), 4-0 Passlack (90'+2)

Dortmund were looking to bounce back following successive defeats to Augsburg in the Bundesliga and Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup against a hitherto unbeaten Freiburg side. For the opening half an hour, Christian Streich’s visitors were comfortably containing the BVB attack until a vital tackle from Marco Reus helped open the scoring. The Dortmund captain won the ball in midfield from Nicolas Höfler, paving the way for Reyna to play in Erling Haaland, who duly provided a clinical finish across Florian Müller. That goal sparked the game into life, at least for the home side, as Reyna and Haaland both came within inches of doubling the hosts’ lead just minutes later. Müller then made a fine double save to deny Thomas Meunier and Mats Hummels, with Dortmund ending the first half with the bit between their teeth.

Superior from start to finish, Dortmund doubled their lead with their first attempt on goal after the restart as Reyna’s floated corner was met by a superb Emre Can header at the back post. Reyna was unlucky not to make it a hat-trick of assists when Axel Witsel fired over a perfect opportunity from close range, before Reus directed a header from Jude Bellingham’s chipped cross off target. In the end, the third goal could only come from one source as Reyna latched onto a loose Freiburg pass in midfield and sent Haaland in on goal. The Norway international fired home a thunderous finish to complete his second brace of the league season, before turning provider in added time for Felix Passlack to round out the scoring with his first Bundesliga goal.
