Dortmund survive cup scare to reach quarter-finals

Erling Haaland netted his 21st goal of the season for Borussia Dortmund as they overcame Paderborn in the DFB Cup last 16.
Erling Haaland netted his 21st goal of the season for Borussia Dortmund as they overcame Paderborn in the DFB Cup last 16.

Erling Haaland fired Borussia Dortmund into the DFB Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday, although his side had to survive a scare against Bundesliga 2 outfit Paderborn, who sent the game into extra time before BVB eventually triumphed 3-2.

Borussia Dortmund 3-2 Paderborn
Goals: 1-0
Can (6'), 2-0 Sancho (16'), 2-1 Justvan (79'), 2-2 Owusu (pen. 90'+7), 3-2 Haaland (95')

Mats Hummels was out with a slight knee injury and Marco Reus, Raphael Guerreiro and Gio Reyna were all on the bench at kick-off, but the home side soon began to exert their dominance and put their visitors on the back foot. It wasn’t long before their pressure took its toll, as Can rifled in at the back post after Paderborn failed to clear their lines at a corner. Sancho doubled BVB’s lead with just over a quarter of an hour on the clock when he collected Julian Brandt’s pass in a central position, held off his marker and prodded past goalkeeper Leopold Zingerle from close range. Brandt and Thomas Delaney both went close to adding their names to the  scoresheet, while at the other end Marwin Hitz was largely a spectator, although he did have to be alert to keep out a powerful angled shot from Christopher Antwi-Adjei.

Dortmund appeared to have the game under control at that stage, and while they failed to maintain their superiority in the second half, they were rarely threatened by Paderborn as fouls and substitutions interrupted the flow of the game. The tie sparked back into life in the closing stages though when Julian Justvan pulled a goal back from the edge of the box. The visitors pushed for an equaliser but Haaland thought he had killed the game off with a strike on the counter in added time, but it was chalked off following a VAR review and Paderborn awarded a penalty for a foul by Felix Passlack in the build-up. Substitute Prince Osei Owusu converted from the spot with the last kick of the game to send the match into extra time. Both teams tired as the clock ticked on, but Haaland won it for BVB after collecting Delaney's long ball forward and slotting past Zingerle to ensure the 2017 cup winners will be in the quarter-final draw.

DORTMUND GO THROUGH!

BVB appeared to be cruising into the quarter-finals after the first 45 minutes, but Paderborn fought back and scored twice late on in the second half to force extra time. Haaland's finish was decisive, booking Dortmund's place in the next round.

vs

LAST-GASP CORNER

Zingerle comes up for a corner as Paderborn pile everyone forward. It's whipped into the box but Hitz does well to punch clear.

vs

TWO MORE MINUTES

We're into stoppage time now. Paderborn have 120 seconds to score again!

vs

SANCHO INJURED

The England international is helped off the field after receiving treatment for a little while. He's replaced by Reus for the final few minutes.

SUPERB FROM PASSLACK

The youngster dribbles down the right, skipping past two or three challenges before getting to the corner flag. He runs down a few more seconds there before conceding a goal kick.

vs

ALMOST FROM GUERREIRO

The Portuguese shoots from 16 yards but his goal-bond effort deflects off a Paderborn boot and goes out for a corner.

vs

TIRED LEGS

Fatigue is starting to show in a number of players on both sides now. Their touch isn't quite as sharp, and more passes are going astray. The real question is whether that will lead to another goal in the next few minutes...

vs

SECOND HALF!

15 more minutes to go!

vs

HALF TIME!

There were six additional minutes owing to injuries and the VAR review, but now we're in a brief half-time break in extra time. The action will get underway again shortly.

vs

SPACE OPENING UP

Dortmund are getting in behind Paderborn with increasing regularity now. Haaland bursts into space down the right and tries to square it to Reyna, arriving in the box, but his pass lacks the required accuracy and Zingerle pounces on it.

vs

HAALAND ALMOST IN

Sancho dribbles forward through the middle and lays the ball off to Passlack, charging down the right. He could shoot as he arrives into the box but instead tries to find Haaland in the centre. He pass is behind him though, and Paderborn can clear.

HAALAND SURELY?!?

Can does brilliantly to dribble out from the back, surging past three defenders before playing a superb ball behind the Paderborn defence. Haaland is first to it, well ahead of Zingerle, who is stranded in no-man's land a long way off his line. Haaland tries to curl it past him into the far corner, but gets his angles wrong and the ball drifts wide. That could - and should - have been the goal to put the game to bed!

vs

VAR REVIEW - GOAL GIVEN

It's checked for offside as Haaland was just in Paderborn's half when Delaney's pass was played, but the goal is given.

PADERBORN EQUALISE!

There certainly was a late twist! Haaland thought he had sealed the win after breaking forward on his own and putting the ball in the net. His goal was initially given, but after the referee checked his pitch-side VAR monitor, he ruled it out and awarded a penalty to the visitors for a previous foul by Passlack. Substitute Owusu stepped up to coolly send Hitz the wrong way with the last kick of the game and send the tie into extra time!

We're into the first of four minutes of stoppage time now. Will we see a dramatic late twist?

vs

HAALAND'S STRENGTH

The forward runs a few more seconds off the clock, shielding the ball from two defenders at the corner flag before winning a corner for his team. Reyna takes it short and Haaland does the same trick again. His frame is so big and strong, the Paderborn players can't get around him.

CAN DORTMUND HOLD ON?

Paderborn are really pushing now, bringing on an extra striker as they look to take the game to extra time.

DANGEROUS POSITION

Akanji gives away a free-kick deep inside his own half, wide on the right. Terrazzino fizzes it in to the box, but Hitz watches it all the way and can clear.

vs

ALMOST FROM SCHULZ

That goal seems to have stirred something in Dortmund, and they keep the ball well for a while as they break down the left. Eventually Schulz finds some space behind the defence and he tries to cross for Haaland in the middle, but it's just flicked out by a covering defender before the Norwegian can get there.

vs

PADERBORN BACK IN IT!

Passlack slips as he tries to clear a cross into the box from the right and his header goes only as far as Justvan on the edge of the box. He controls it, turns his marker and fires a low shot into the net via Hitz's boot. This could make for a very interesting final 10 minutes!

FRESH LEGS

BVB haven't looked anywhere near as dangerous in this half, so head coach Terzic brings on Reyna for Brandt in a bid to provide fresh impetus.

The Dortmund attacker curls an inviting cross into the middle, aiming for the unmarked Can, but it's just too high for him to make contact.

NICE FROM DELANEY

The Dane shows some quick feet as he collects a pass on the edge of the box and surges past a defender on the left. He tries to cross into the middle, but it's blocked by a defender.

57'
vs

ALMOST FROM PADERBORN

The home side a caught napping as a free-kick is swung in deep from the right. It bounces past everyone and comes to Srbeny at the back post. He sticks out a leg to redirect it towards goal, but the ball goes just over the bar.

vs

HAALAND ALERT

The striker almost intercepts a back pass, having been in the defender's blind spot. He sprints towards the ball, but Zingerle just gets there first and hits the ball off him for a goal kick. Another lucky escape there for the visitors.

NIGGLY FOULS

ALMOST A THIRD

Zingerle wants too much time on the ball and is put under pressure by Haaland. The Paderborn goalkeeper misplaces his pass out to Sancho, and the ball ends up with Delaney inside the box - but he shoots wide. A big let-off for the Bundesliga 2 side there.
