Dortmund claim convincing Revierderby win

Thorgan Hazard joined Raphael Guerreiro and Erling Haaland on the scoresheet as Borussia Dortmund made light work of Schalke, recording a comfortable 4-0 win in Saturday's behind-closed-doors Revierderby at the Signal Iduna Park.

Borussia Dortmund 4-0 Schalke
Goals: 1-0 Haaland (29'), 2-0 Guerreiro (45'), 3-0 Hazard (49'), 4-0 Guerreiro (63')

Superior from start to finish, Dortmund did not let the absence of 80,000 fervent fans throw them off their title-chasing stride. The Black-Yellows had already gone close through Haaland, when the 19-year-old steered Hazard’s right-wing cross beyond Schalke goalkeeper Markus Schubert with less than half an hour on the clock for his 10th Bundesliga goal in nine games. Guerreiro will feel he should have done better with another presentable opening moments later, but made amends with a clinical finish on the stroke of half-time after Mahmoud Dahoud and Julian Brandt combined to ruthlessly pick off an errant Schubert clearance.

Schalke’s only real opening in a one-sided first half had come by way of a Daniel Caligiuri free-kick into the Dortmund wall, and their task was made a whole lot harder soon after the restart. Play was allowed to continue after Salif Sane upended Haaland on halfway, allowing Brandt to turn and find Hazard, who thundered his second goal in as many games past Schubert from inside the box. Brandt was the catalyst for Dortmund’s fourth, spraying a superb pass out wide for the run of Guerreiro. The Portugal international exchanged passes with Haaland, before firing off an audacious outside-of-the-boot finish into the net to cap a win that keeps Lucien Favre's side hot on the heels of leaders Bayern Munich.
