Haaland double guides BVB into Champions League quarters-finals

Erling Haaland was the hero for Borussia Dortmund as his double against Sevilla helped them earn a place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals thanks to a 2-2 second-leg draw in Germany.

Borussia Dortmund advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after Erling Haaland scored in each half for a 5-4 victory on aggregate after a dramatic 2-2 draw in Tuesday’s last-16 second leg.

Borussia Dortmund 2-2 Sevilla - Dortmund win 5-4 on aggregate
Goals: 1-0 Haaland (35’), 2-0 Haaland (pen. 54’), 2-1 En-Nesyri (pen. 68’), 2-2 En-Nesyri (90'+6)

Trailing 3-2 after the first leg three weeks previously, Sevilla were obliged to take the game to Dortmund from the off. Lucas Ocampos pounced on a loose pass from Emre Can only three minutes in, but Marwin Hitz clawed away his powerful strike from the edge of the area. Dortmund were pinned back in the opening 10 minutes but Mo Dahoud - who scored their first goal in Spain - then sliced a volley wide from distance. Suso shot off target from a tight angle for Sevilla as the home side - without injured England attacker Jadon Sancho - sat deep and asked the visitors to try and play through them. It was Dortmund, though, who struck first, and no surprise that Haaland was the scorer. Thomas Delaney showed great strength to win the ball back high up the pitch, before Dahoud slipped in Marco Reus who teed up Haaland for a tap in.

Dortmund had a brighter start to the second half, and Haaland bulldozed his way through to put the ball into the net for a second time. His strike was ruled out, though, only for the home side to be awarded a penalty for a pull on Haaland's jersey in an earlier attack. That was only the start of the drama, however, as the Norwegian's penalty - and his follow-up - were both saved by Bounou. The Sevilla keeper had come off his line early, though, meaning Haaland was allowed to retake the spot-kick. The 20-year-old sent his shot into the same corner but this time beat the goalkeeper's dive. Substitute Papu Gomez forced Hitz into a diving stop, but then Can shoved Luuk De Jong as Sevilla got a penalty of their own. Youssef En-Nesyri smashed his effort down the middle to move the Spaniards to within two goals of forcing extra-time. The impressive Jude Bellingham was influential as Dahoud twice went close late on before En-Nesyri powered home a header with seconds remaining. Dortmund clung on, though, to reach the quarter-finals.

DAHOUD!

Dortmund with the chance to finish this on the counter. Bellingham left to Haaland, who squares back across for Reus. He goes back to the Norwegian, who finds Dahoud in the centre, but his shot is seen and held by Bounou.

Long ball into the box with Reus peeling off the back of his man, but he's on the stretch as he heads it and puts it over the bar.

Absolutely no stopping that from En-Nesyri, blasting it dead centre and off the bottom of the crossbar. Dortmund still two goals to the good on aggregate.

PEERLESS HAALAND

The BVB striker is the first player in Champions League history to score at least a brace in four consecutive matches. His 20th goal in the competition also makes him the top scoring Norwegian in the Champions League, surpassing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Same corner to Bounou's left, again he gets a hand to it, but this time can't keep it out and Haaland finally has his deserved second.

PENALTY TO DORTMUND!

Well this is utterly bizarre. Haaland has just scored for his brace after a brilliant counter-attack, but the goal has been ruled out because Haaland was fouled almost a minute earlier in the Sevilla box! So, no goal but a penalty...

HAZARD

An immediate chance for a second as Haaland's ball from the left finds Hazard, who looks to bend it back across goal into the far corner, but it doesn't quite have the curl.

HAALAND AGAIN!

Quite frankly from absolutely nowhere and Haaland maintains his record of scoring in every Champions League game this season. Schulz wins the ball back on the left and plays in Dahoud, who slips it through to Reus. Bounou races out to try and close the angle, but the BVB skipper cuts it back to Haaland who'd peeled off the defenders and the Norwegian buries his ninth goal of the campaign.

Ocampos skips past a couple of challenges as he comes in off the left again before playing it right to Suso, who hits it on the angle. The net ripples but only after the ball bounced off the advertising boards behind the goal.

HAZARD!

A first spell of possession for Dortmund before Hummels pings it forward looking for the run of Hazard. He gets there, running on an angle to the right, but doesn't see Diego Carlos has slipped behind him and he has no defender around him, so tries a blind ball high across the box towards Haaland, but he was marked and it's intercepted.
