Borussia Dortmund have moved to strengthen their options at full-back by signing versatile Norway international Julian Ryerson from Union Berlin.

Ryerson, who has made 21 appearances across three competitions for Union this season, moves to Dortmund on a three-and-a-half-year-deal through to summer 2026.

The 25-year-old's arrival provides some important cover in various positions, with the Norway international adept at playing on both flanks.

"We need defensive stability for the challenges that await us," said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

"Julian Ryerson is an intelligent and agressive defender, in a good way. He can play on either side of the back four and in a back three. We're very happy to have made the transfer happen so quickly."

Ryerson says goodbye to Union, having made 109 appearances across a four-and-a-half period in which he helped the capital club gain promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time and twice qualify for Europe.

"It wasn't an easy decision for me to leave Union because I have so much to thank this special club, my teammates, colleagues and fans for," Ryerson explained.

"I only have fond memories of my time at the Alten Försterei, but now I'm looking forward to a new chapter at Borussia Dortmund and helping the club realise their objectives in the Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB Cup.

Ryerson (l.) provides immediate cover for the injured Thomas Meunier (r.) on the right-hand side of the BVB defence.

"As an opponent, I've always been impressed with the atmosphere at the Signal Iduna Park. Now I'm looking forward to playing with the famous Yellow Wall behind me."

With right-back Thomas Meunier currently sidelined, Ryerson could go straight into the starting line-up for Dortmund's first Bundesliga fixture of 2023 against Augsburg on Sunday.
