Borussia Dortmund have announced the signing of Brazilian left-back Yan Couto from Manchester City.

The four-time capped O Seleção international, who spent the last two seasons on loan at La Liga side Girona, has joined Dortmund on an initial one-year loan until 30 June 2025.

The move can become a permanent one at the end of the loan period if "certain sporting criteria are met", according to a club statement.

"It's a dream come true for me," said Couto. "Borussia Dortmund is a special club. Every kid in Brazil knows how big this club is, knows the fans and is fascinated by the Yellow Wall. I can't wait to wear the BVB jersey for the first time and experience the power and emotion in this great stadium."

Couto finished the 2023/24 campaign with eight assists, the seventh highest total in Spain and the most of any defender, helping Girona qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

A fully-fledged Brazil international, Couto has four caps to his name and a further assist. He was also included in Dorival Júnior’s squad for the 2024 Copa America.

"Yan is an extremely exciting player," said Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl. "He can work the entire flank, combines exceptional dynamism with intensity, technical finesse and dribbling strength. He's versatile, loves one-on-one duels, can hit precise crosses and has a strong offensive drive.

"His development in Spain was remarkable, and yet he still has a lot of development potential. He therefore fits perfectly into the profile we were looking for in this position. We are very pleased that we were able to convince him to join us."

Couto becomes Dortmund's fourth signing of the 2024/25 summer window, joining Waldemar Anton, Serhou Guirassy and Pascal Groß.
