After failing to win their opening Bundesliga match for the first time in 11 years, Dortmund were desperate to get their season properly underway against Union.
The Black & Yellows had history on their side, having won all six previous home meetings with Union without dropping a point. New signing Aarón Anselmino made his full debut for Niko Kovač's side, while Union came into the match in a confident mood following their 2-1 victory over Stuttgart on the opening weekend.
Both sides made a tentative start to the match, but Dortmund gradually began to assert their authority, with Guirassy squandering a golden opportunity in the 24th minute after pouncing on Tom Rothe's undercooked backpass, only to be denied by a superb save from Frederik Rønnow.
The Guinean striker made amends just before half-time, however, when Yan Couto beat his man on the right flank and delivered a pinpoint cross with his supposedly weaker left foot. Guirassy reacted quickest to poke home from close range, giving the hosts a deserved lead at the break.
Union started the second half with renewed purpose as Ilić forced a spectacular save from Gregor Kobel with a powerful header in the 47th minute.
Just as the visitors were growing in confidence, Dortmund doubled their advantage through a moment of brilliance in the 58th minute. Guirassy initiated the move with a sublime backheel to Maximilian Beier, who immediately returned the ball into the striker's path. Guirassy made no mistake, delicately lifting the ball over the onrushing Rønnow to put Dortmund firmly in control.
The victory was sealed in the 81st minute when substitute Felix Nmecha rifled home a venomous shot following a corner, capping off a commanding display from the hosts.
The Guinean forward was simply unstoppable against Union once again. After scoring four times in last season's corresponding fixture, Guirassy picked up where he left off with a clinical brace that showcased his complete striking repertoire. His first goal highlighted his instincts as a forward; reacting quickest to Couto's cross, while his second finish - a delicate chip over Rønnow - was a testament to his composure and technical excellence.
Beyond his goals, Guirassy's link-up play was exceptional, particularly for his second goal where his backheel to Beier initiated the move.
