Jadon Sancho was once again the hero as Borussia Dortmund progressed to the DFB Cup semi-finals on Tuesday after overcoming Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-0 at Borussia-Park.
Gladbach 0-1 Dortmund
Goal: 0-1 Sancho (66')
Sent off: Dahoud (90'+3)
Gladbach had the better start and could have gone in front as early as the second minute when Jonas Hofmann was given time and space on the right to pick out a cross, which Marcus Thuram flicked wide from six yards. Lars Stindl and Marco Reus each volleyed over from promising positions in a lively opening period, but it was Erling Haaland who had Dortmund’s best opportunity of the first 45 minutes. The Norwegian spun Nico Elvedi on the halfway line to race onto Mats Hummels’ raking pass forward, but was uncharacteristically wayward in his finishing when one-on-one with goalkeeper Tobias Sippel. Thuram did have the ball in the net on the stroke of half-time after a flowing counter-attack, but it was ruled out for offside.
The visitors also had a goal chalked off early in the second half, with Haaland smashing home from Reus’ cross, but it was disallowed for a foul on Ramy Bensebaini in the build-up. Dortmund did eventually take the lead, however, doing so from a blistering counter-attack. Nico Schulz won the ball on the edge of his own penalty area and played it forward to Haaland, who immediately flicked it to the right to Reus. The BVB captain spied Sancho’s run on the opposite side of the pitch and played a superb first-time pass into the unmarked Englishman’s path, and he finished low off the post from the edge of the area. The home side reacted with a triple substitution, as Breel Embolo, Hannes Wolf and Denis Zakaria all entered the fray, but it was Dortmund who came closest to scoring again when Haaland was sent clean through with Sippel once more, but the Gladbach goalkeeper produced a superb save to keep out the striker’s stinging shot. Dortmund had Mahmoud Dahoud sent off for a second yellow card in injury time, but Edin Terzic’s side were able to hold on for a narrow win that sends them into the last four.

AS IT HAPPENED!
The away side will finish the game with 10 players after Dahoud is sent off for a second bookable offence. He was a tad late in a tackle on Bensebaini, who received a yellow card for his reaction.
This one's not over yet as there's still plenty of stoppage time for a late twist!
Zakaria's curling effort from range flies agonisingly wide of the far post!
BVB win a free-kick in a promising area, left of centre and about 30 yards out. Can takes it but his attempted shot is high, wide and not very pretty.
Haaland bears down on goal for the second time this game, going one-on-one with Sippel again. This time the 20-year-old's shot is on target, but his stinging drive is superbly kept out by Sippel!
The French forward has a go from the edge of the box but his low shot is tame and comfortably saved by Hitz.
Gladbach coach Marco Rose reacts to his side being behind by bringing on fresh legs in attack in the form of Embolo and Wolf, while Zakaria will provide more surging runs forward than the more defensive-minded Kramer.
Bellingham wins a free-kick wide on the right, and Reus whips it into the box. Hummels meets it in the middle, but heads over the bar.
Sancho's goal was his last action of the game after indicating a tweak in his thigh. He's now on the bench with an ice pack strapped around his leg, with Hazard now on in his place. Hofmann has also limped off with a knock for Gladbach; Lazaro comes on for him.
Gladbach have a corner but Dortmund break forward in textbook fashion. Schulz wins the ball on the edge of the box and plays it forward, with Reus eventually playing a superb first-time pass from the right into Sancho's path, over on the left. The 20-year-old takes a touch and slides it in off the post from the edge of the area.
Lainer does brilliantly to wriggle his way to the byline on the right. He pulls the ball back across goal, where it sits up nicely for Bensebaini on his left foot, right on the edge of the box. His first-time drive is flying towards the top corner, but Hitz gets a palm to hit and clears for a corner. A brilliant shot, and equally brilliant save.
The Dortmund defender is too casual as he tries to play the ball out from the back, passing it straight to the feet of Plea on the left-hand corner of the Dortmund box. He wastes no time in smashing an effort at goal, but it's blocked for a corner.
Sancho threads a ball into Reus' path down the left and the Germany international cuts it back into the middle. It's behind Elvedi, but Haaland is on hand to smash the ball home from six yards. The goal is chalked off, however, for a foul on Bensebaini in the build-up.
The Dortmund captain is shown the yellow card for a late tackle on Bensebaini.
BVB have emerged for the second half with renewed vigour and are putting the hosts under pressure at the moment. Haaland is just unable to get on the end of Schulz's cross from the left, while Dahoud's volley on the follow up is blocked.
No changes from either side at the interval.
A lovely move from Gladbach as the ball is slid into Thuram's path. He cuts inside Hummels, leaving the defender on the ground, before slotting it low past Hitz. It won't count though, as the flag is raised for offside against the Frenchman.
Not long left now as the match enters the only minute of stoppage time.
A promising move from Dortmund as Sancho rides a couple of tackles on the left and flicks the ball to Dahoud, who immediately plays it forward to Haaland on the edge of the Gladbach box. He in turn plays the ball behind the home defence, expecting Sancho to be running on to it, but the Englishman wasn't on the same wavelength this time, and it goes out for a goal kick.
The flow of the game has been a bit stop-start in the last few minutes, the action peppered with little fouls here and there every few seconds.
You'd normally bet your house on Haaland scoring this one as he spins Elvedi and races away to collect Hummels' raking ball forward. The Norwegian can't get the ball out of his feet quick enough though, giving Elvedi just enough time to get back and put him off - Haaland's shot ends up going wide.
Bensebaini splits the Dortmund defence with a lovely diagonal ball on the ground into Plea's run down the right. He gets to the byline and pulls the ball back into the middle, but it takes a deflection off a Dortmund toe and flies towards the near post. Hitz watches it all the way though, and calmly snuffs out the danger.
The Gladbach captain also gets his name taken for a high boot in a tackle with Hummels.
Dahoud loses control of the ball as Dortmund try to play their way forward after a Gladbach attack breaks down. The midfielder slides into a tackle but it a touch too late and catches Bensebaini. He receives a booking for his trouble, but ultimately the free-kick comes to nothing.
Elvedi has been charged with keeping an eye on Haaland tonight and it's turning into a very watchable duel. Both are big, physical players, and so far the Dortmund striker has been kept quiet. Emphasis on the so far...
Thuram touches the ball back to Neuhaus in the middle of the pitch and spins away, collecting the return pass into the left-hand channel. He tries to cross for Plea in the box, but it's blocked by Hummels.
Gladbach charge forward on the counter, with Stindl, Lainer and Plea all exchanging quick passes before Stindl lass it off to Thuram on the left-hand edge of the box. But the Frenchman slips just as he's about to control the ball, allowing Morey the chance to nip in and steal the ball off his toe.
Hummels slides a terrific ball forward into Haaland's feet and he instantly touches it back to Bellingham on the edge of the Gladbach box. The 17-year-old tries to create space for a pass but is shepherded away from danger by a defender and the opening is lost.
Stindl lines up a shot from about 25 yards out, slightly right of centre. He strikes it well but it's straight at Hitz, who makes a comfortable save.
Dortmund's first opening of the match falls to Reus after a poor defensive header goes straight to the 31-year-old. He's unmarked, on his left foot and about 10 yards out, but snatches at his shot and it whizzes over the target.
This is a lovely move from Gladbach, who have had the better start. Thuram harries down the left and pings a cross into the middle, which Hofmann chests back down to Stindl. The captain takes it on the half-volley but can't keep his shot down and it sails over the bar. It wouldn't have counted ultimately as the assistant referee raises his flag for offside, but it was nevertheless very promising from the hosts.
Guerreiro is unable to continue so is replaced at left-back by Schulz.
