Dortmund up to second with victory at Gladbach

Achraf Hakimi's second-half goal saw Borussia Dortmund move up to second in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win away at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-2 Borussia Dortmund
Goals: 0-1 Hazard (8'), 1-1 Stindl (50'), 1-2 Hakimi (71')

Stefan Lainer tested Roman Bürki in the opening minutes but it was the visitors from Dortmund who drew first blood with their opening effort of the game when Erling Haaland intercepted a sloppy pass and ran at goal before playing in Thorgan Hazard. The former Gladbach man turned three defenders before firing his new club into the lead. Ramy Bensebaini had a great chance to strike back when picked out by Jonas Hofmann's defence-splitting pass on the counter, but he blasted wide. The Foals suffered another setback midway through the half when Switzerland internationals Denis Zakaria and Yann Sommer collided trying to clear a ball ahead of Haaland. The midfielder came off worse and had to be replaced by Tony Jantschke. Alassane Plea had a chance to level up the game when he got ahead of his man in the box to meet Bensebaini's cross, but his first-time effort with the outside of his right boot was well saved by Bürki.

However, Gladbach needed just five minutes of the second half to find an equaliser as Hofmann's deep corner was volleyed back across goal by Plea and captain Lars Stindl placed it through the legs of Haaland on the line to continue his impressive scoring run. Hazard then came close to restoring the lead when he met Hakimi's cross with his head, but Sommer produced a stunning low save to deny his former teammate. BVB did get the lead again, though, when substitute Jadon Sancho played in Hakimi on the right and the Morocco international coolly slotted the ball into the far corner for his third goal of the campaign. Sancho then came close himself with a curling effort that rebounded back off the post before Breel Embolo was handed a golden opportunity to level again but scuffed his effort wide when unmarked in front of goal.
