The Bundesliga promotion chase is heating up heading into the final few games.
The Bundesliga promotion chase is heating up heading into the final few games.

St. Pauli's defeat to Hamburg meant it was change at the top as Holstein Kiel jumped into first place. Fortuna Düsseldorf, meanwhile, stay third...

The Storks suffered a shock defeat to Kaiserslautern on Matchday 31, but made up for it by taking down Wehen Wiesbaden and jumping back to top spot. A top three finish is secured, but Kiel are aiming for more on the verge of a first-ever Bundesliga season. Next up are Fortuna Düsseldorf, and a draw or win at home would secure a historic promotion in front of their own fans.

St. Pauli were on the brink of a Bundesliga return when Matchday 32 rolled round but the result of the weekend saw them beaten away by neighbours Hamburg on Friday evening. Kiel captialised on Sunday evening to regain top spot and now it's game on. Should Fortuna win against Kiel next time out and Pauli again drop points against Onsabruck, we're in for an almighty final day.

Düsseldorf have been out of the top flight since relegation in 2019/20, with last season's fourth-place finish their best attempt at promotion in the intervening three seasons. Daniel Thioune's team are having another good crack at it in 2023/24, yet having won six on the spin to heap the pressure on the top two, Fortuna failed to take advantage of a rare Kiel slip-up on Matchday 31 by drawing away at lowly Schalke. That result helped Hamburg move back to within touching distance of third spot with two to play. Having beaten Nuremburg 3-1, next up is leaders Kiel on the penultimate Matchday - a gigantic clash.

Hamburg need a strong finish if they're to force their way back into the top three with two games remaining, and a morale-boosting 4-0 victory against Eintracht Braunschweig on Matchday 31 was the perfect start. A third successive play-off appearance will be tricky, especially with results having been inconsistent both before and after Steffen Baumgart's arrival. A morale-boosting win over local rivals St. Pauli on Matchday 32 will give them hope heading into the final straight, but they must win both remaining games to reel in Düsseldorf and hope that Die Fortunen drop points themselves.
