Leverkusen have dropped points only four times in the league this season and are yet to lose a single match - in all competitions. It is the first time in their history - and only the second by any club - they have reached Matchday 29 without defeat. They got to Matchday 24 without a loss in 2009/10, but were only third and finished the campaign in fourth, 11 points behind champions Bayern. They also have the deep scars of having twice thrown away the title on the final day of the season.
Bayer’s most recent 1-0 win at Union Berlin moved them onto 76 points, which is the second-best tally ever at this stage of a Bundesliga season, two fewer than the 78 points that Pep Guardiola’s Munich side had on the board in 2013/14. That Bayern team had already been crowned champions on Matchday 27 - the earliest in history - but Leverkusen can now wrap it up on Matchday 29.

When Bayern were beaten 3-2 by Heidenheim on Matchday 28, the gap to the summit was opened up to 16 points, while Stuttgart subsequently caught the defending champions in terms of their points tally by winning in Dortmund. While Bayern's 2-0 victory against Cologne means they can still theoretically win the title, it would take nothing short of a miracle for the Bavarians or VfB to do so.
Indeed, Leverkusen need just two points from their remaining fixtures to take the Meisterschale and, despite Bayern and Stuttgart's victories, they will be guaranteed to be crowned champions if Die Werkself defeat Werder Bremen on Sunday.
